Left Leaning Media

Left-Leaning Media?
Tuesday, December 20, 2005
By Brit Hume

Now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine:

The majority of mainstream media tilts to the left... that according to a revised study by UCLA, set for publication next week. Among the findings: The Wall Street Journal, despite its conservative opinion pages, is the most liberal outlet, followed by CBS' Evening News, The New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times.

In fact, of the 20 major media outlets studied, 18 of them scored left-of-center. Programs ranked among the most centrist news shows include The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer and ABC's Good Morning America.

The study examines U.S. media coverage over the last 10 years, comparing individual news outlets with individual lawmakers. Lawmakers were scored on the basis of votes and speeches, while media organizations were scored on their references to think tanks and policy groups.

1. By Brit Hume- LOL
It would be just like him to cite some bogus social science research.

Give me a nice grant, and I'll "find out" something like this, too.

2. my thought too
Given their proven propensity for buying favorable opinion and news coverage it wouldn't surprise me a bit to learn-eventually- that one or the other of the authors of this study was working under a grant from one or the other of the frightwing "think tanks" which so effectively funnel funds around to support this sort of work. Just sayin I haven't had either the time or inclination to do much tracking on this "study". I do find it somewhat revealing that under any other circumstances you'll find the frightwingers rearing up on their hind legs and speaking much ill of pointy -headed perfessers and academics and about the liberal bias in academe, but a study favorable to them appears and suddenly a couple faculty members at a public university in the same city that houses hollyweird are veritable fonts of truth and wisdom.I believe there's a word for that, I believe it starts with H.

6. Yeah, I'm going to take a look at it
It's been referenced before, but it doesn't appear to be out yet.

What'll you bet the scaling and weighting is, shall we say- equivocal at best. FAIR has published a few studies like this- though my recollection is that they only cover the broadcast media.

Obviously, they arrived at somewhat different conclusions...;-)

5. I was wondering when the howler monkeys would pick this up
Honestly, that study was big on "everybody knows that..." and anecdote and very thin on actual numbers and examples.

The study head thought the NAACP was a far left organization, ferkrissakes.

I guess if you want to cite a left bias, all you have to do is move the center smack into the middle of the extreme right fringe.

Hey, Spit! Ever hear of FAIR???

8. Journalists don't decide what makes the news
they just don't write the stories that they know will not help their career.
And the editor doesn't select the stories that he knows will not help his career.

More so in the corporate owned mass media then elsewhere, because corporate interests tend to be large and weigh heavy. And large corporations tend to be owned by republicans.
