NYC strike: TWU displays for millions the power organized labor can have
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 09:08 AM by Karmadillo
Bad, bad, bad. What if this strike is successful and other people get the idea it's OK to start organizing against corporations and their government? How can we ever win the War on Terror and the War on the American People if stuff like that can happen? Bad, bad, bad.

<edit>

The TWU is taking a strong stand against concessions that have become a pattern for labor over the last 25 years—which is why the strike is so important for the embattled union movement as a whole. After years in which unions accepted one wave of givebacks after another—most recently, wage cuts and dumping of pensions in the airline industry—one union has drawn a line.

At the same time, the MTA and the city are determined to break the back of this strike. Stopping their anti-union attack will depend on translating the sentiment of support for strikers into concrete solidarity.

The TWU has put on display for millions of people the power that organized labor can have. “We’re out here for everybody, not just us,” said one bus operator. “This isn’t just about wage increases,” another striker added. “We’ve been treated with no dignity. It’s about securing pensions and health benefits. It’s about our future.”

The TWU strike is a fight for all of us—with the potential of setting a fighting example for working people everywhere. The transit workers need—and deserve—your support.

4. The strike could be the spark that lit the fires of revolution in
America. It might depend on how long the union can hold out.

7. If the million dollar a day fines stand, they are already out of
business. They are almost in a position now of having to hold out not only for the original request but to have the fines rescinded. The union is being man-handled by the court in my opinion.

9. Are you referring to the pay dock of two days pay for day out
on strike or something worse? Here again, at some point, the workers will be so "in the hole" in docked pay that they will feel compelled to stay with the strike to maintain some bargaining power. The worse case outcome for the union would be that new workers are hire and all of the fines and legal actions against them remained in effect. They would have lost the strike, their jobs and still be in for penalties.

6. Need a union to join? Here's one that could help us all...
Thanks to Koko01 for originally posting this(and thank you for letting me crosspost!):

http://www.workingamerica.org/home.cfm

New UNION forming for NonUnion Workers and Retirees (AFL-CIO)! Must Read
Great new Website, affiliated with AFL-CIO for all of us who are sick and tired of the Downsizing/Merging and Layoffs which follow. Now is a chance for us all to join and have a voice in a NEW AMERICAN LABOR MOVEMENT which can include all of us: Techies, Clericals, Corporate Employees, Service Industry workers...all of us who are not currently eligible for a Union where we have a voice. Let's do this and make it work for us. And for those who are concerned about Labor Union's bad reputation the past few decades, we can work to make sure that the corruption is kept out by vigilant monitoring of elected officials.

It's time for all of us to unite and have a voice. We need lobbyists who work for US. Think of the money we could raise that would send the K-Street crowd out of DC. Think of how we could have a united voice to go after our Senators and Congresspersons who continue to give away our rights to the Corporations.

Check out their website. It looks really interesting and I'm going to join and donate. The time has come!

Help Build a Workers' Movement. Nonunion workers and retirees are invited to join the people power of America's union movement and help make America work for all of us. (credit to Buzzflash for posting this headline and the link to the website)
