21 MILLION BARRELLS A DAY. Yeah thats right, ANWR will make us:

I don't have a link readily available, but I read a story not too long about how this talk of drilling ANWR may be moot anyway, because the plans and estimates everyone is using aren't exactly up to date. In recent years of melting glaciers and rising air temperatures, the permafrost -- the hard frozen ground which never thaws out, thus providing a hard, stable bed for the roadways and equipment needed to man and service the drilling sites -- is thawing out. Anyone who has been in Vermont in the springtime knows the implications of thawing ground; serious mud. So serious, in fact, that Mud has even become a defacto season in northern New England.

So, ironically, after all the threats to the environment, the lying, stealing, bribing, arm-twisting political bullshit which arose out of this ludicrous proposal to drill ANWR, the first truck in may sink to its running boards and become the ice-encrusted discovery of some future generation in the next epoch. What a fitting time capsule for this period to leave behind; instead of a frozen wooly mammoth, archeologists will dig up a Halliburton truck.

I don't have the numbers right, but basically there used to 300and some days of Permafrost in ANWR. Last year there were 70something.

The National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., says global warming may destroy most permafrost across the Northern Hemisphere.

Researchers said warming may decimate the top 10 feet or more of perennially frozen soil, altering ecosystems as well as damaging buildings and roads across Canada, Alaska, and Russia.

New simulations from NCAR show more than half of the area covered by the topmost layer of permafrost could thaw by 2050 and as much as 90 percent by 2100. Scientists expect the thawing to increase runoff into the Arctic Ocean and release vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

The study is the first to examine the state of permafrost in a global model that includes interactions among the atmosphere, ocean, land, and sea ice as well as a soil model that depicts freezing and thawing.
