R Pete Dominici - It's ok to drill in Alaska, it's FROZEN!! (CSPAN-2)
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 11:05 AM by Moochy
He thinks its Just fine to drill on ANWR, since it's frozen, there is nothing to be contaminated.
Its like his freezer!

"All that will be there is drillheads, they look like little outhouses."

Why it sounds kind of quaint, He's convinced me.

150,000 barrells of OIL!! HOW WILL THAT HARM ANYTHING?

2. fuzzy math
Petey said that at $30/barrel, AK had more oil than TX. At $60/barrel, Ak will have twice as much as TX.

freeptards!

3. Why aren't the Dems...

That America will be safer with ANWR. :patriot:

You heard it, with that petty bit of oil, we are 150,000 barrels safer.

Let's look at that number, 150,000 more barrels, and US consumption ?
21 MILLION BARRELLS A DAY. Yeah thats right, ANWR will make us:

150,000 barrels out of our daily need for 21,000,000 or
about 10 minutes of US demand. that's right. Ten minutes.

4. Ironically, it isn't even that frozen anymore
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 11:14 AM by Atman
I don't have a link readily available, but I read a story not too long about how this talk of drilling ANWR may be moot anyway, because the plans and estimates everyone is using aren't exactly up to date. In recent years of melting glaciers and rising air temperatures, the permafrost -- the hard frozen ground which never thaws out, thus providing a hard, stable bed for the roadways and equipment needed to man and service the drilling sites -- is thawing out. Anyone who has been in Vermont in the springtime knows the implications of thawing ground; serious mud. So serious, in fact, that Mud has even become a defacto season in northern New England.

So, ironically, after all the threats to the environment, the lying, stealing, bribing, arm-twisting political bullshit which arose out of this ludicrous proposal to drill ANWR, the first truck in may sink to its running boards and become the ice-encrusted discovery of some future generation in the next epoch. What a fitting time capsule for this period to leave behind; instead of a frozen wooly mammoth, archeologists will dig up a Halliburton truck.

7. Al Gore said that...
Edited on Wed Dec-21-05 11:31 AM by Viva_La_Revolution
I saw him speak here in Portland last year.

I don't have the numbers right, but basically there used to 300and some days of Permafrost in ANWR. Last year there were 70something.

I'll try to find it...

links added on edit...

68. Interior Alaska -- Permafrost thawing. Permafrost thawing is causing the ground to subside 16-33 feet (4.9-10 m) in parts of interior Alaska. The permafrost surface has warmed by about 3.5?F (1.9?C) since the 1960's.

http://www.climatehotmap.org/namerica.html

Permafrost underlies most of Alaska, and the recent several decades of warming have been accompanied by extensive thawing, causing increased erosion, landslides, sinking of the ground surface, and disruption and damage to forests, buildings, and infrastructure. Thawing is projected to accelerate under future warming, with as much as the top 30 to 35 feet (10 meters) of discontinuous permafrost thawing by 2100. Warming is also likely to impair transport by shortening the seasonal use of ice roads.

8. As you note, not nearly as frozen as in the past
The National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., says global warming may destroy most permafrost across the Northern Hemisphere.

Researchers said warming may decimate the top 10 feet or more of perennially frozen soil, altering ecosystems as well as damaging buildings and roads across Canada, Alaska, and Russia.

New simulations from NCAR show more than half of the area covered by the topmost layer of permafrost could thaw by 2050 and as much as 90 percent by 2100. Scientists expect the thawing to increase runoff into the Arctic Ocean and release vast amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

The study is the first to examine the state of permafrost in a global model that includes interactions among the atmosphere, ocean, land, and sea ice as well as a soil model that depicts freezing and thawing.

10. He really did try to make the case
that since it's frozen there is no "environment" to pollute.
As if a crude oil would just sit there like a popsicle.

You can't pollute in the arctic silly, it's frozen!

Ok, so the desert is not an environment, since nothing grows there right Mr Ecology?
