For instance, lawyers refer to it as a retainer. In my line of work it is known as confidence/seed money.

9. If it's money against what the consultant is supposed to earn
then it's a retainer. If it's money paid just for taking the job it's a signing bonus..

question was typed in as fast as my fingers could fly (which is only slightly slower than my brain in the morning) as daughter was about to walk out the door to meeting at which her proposal will/will not be accepted and contract drawn up. needed an answer quick and i couldn't even think of a good synonym.
