Senate Blocks Attempt to Allow Drilling in Alaska

<snip>

Democrats accused Stevens, the senior Republican in the Senate, of holding the defense bill hostage to drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

"It took a lot of guts for a lot of people to stand up," Sen. Joe Lieberman, D-Conn., said after the vote.

11. Maybe they could tie it to the "Save Christmas" bill?
...or maybe the "ban flag burning" bill next July?

2. Kerry is working his magic with Lieberman.
I watched them at the post-vote media conference. Kerry needed his vote and tickled old Snaggle-puss under his chin......Well, it worked.

14. In fairness, Lieberman has always been strongly opposed to
the drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge.

4. Not guts, Joementum!! Principle!!!!
But you wouldn't know anything about principles, now would you.
That would require you to discard your ideology, which we'll likely not see happening any time soon.

13. Lieberman stands up for what he believes.
I may not agree with everything but he is a man of principle.

8. Except for Iraq which is at least 10 different issues by itself.
I agree that Joe has a lot of good votes under his belt but to support the neocon policy is beyond the pale for many of us and that doesn't make us bad Dems compared to him being a "great" Dem.

Joe did good here, he gets a cookie. On Iraq and the huge world changing quagmire of shit that the illegal invasion and occupation is he fails miserably and it will take a whole helluva lot more good votes to make him a great Dem in many of our eyes.

9. comparison of Sen. Liebermans' record with Collins and McCain
comparison of Sen. Liebermans' record
Now don't get me wrong. I am no friend of the DLC. Mr. Benchley and Mr. Wyldwolf will vouch for me on that. Nor am I a fan of Joe Lieberman. I particularly resent some of Sen. Lieberman's recent absurd comments about the War in Iraq and Democrats who oppose Bush's war policy. I also have deep philosophic conflicts with Sen. Lieberman especially on foreign policy, military spending, corporate power and issues of trade.

Nonetheless, I think his voting record reasonably qualifies him as a Democrat.

This is a comparison of interest group ratings. I compared Sen. Lieberman with Sen McCain who is highly regarded as a "moderate" Republican and Sen. Susan Collins of Maine who is regarded by many as a "liberal" pro-choice Republican and probably the most liberal Republican in the Senate.

10. Why does it take guts to do your job??
Is he telling us that a Senator in the US cannot vote for the right thing for the people he represents without being afraid to do so? That is a VERY revealing statement!!

So, if this is the case, why have Senators not gone to the people to tell them that they are afraid of the thugs who are in power and therefore have voted to protect themselves rather than the interests of the people who elected them over the past few years? It sounds like that's what he's saying. After all, this was a no-brainer, so why would it take guts to simply say no to the criminals who would try to hide what they're doing from the American people?

Show some real guts and tell us what is that you are afraid of, Joe!

:) :bounce: :woohoo:

Kudos to all senators, including the Republican ones, who voted against it.

Who are the four asinine Dems who voted for it? They need to be taken to the woodshed...
