Poll question: McCarthyism, or J. Edger Hooverism?
What is the current style of suppression being practiced by our government? I vote for McCarthyism.

While J. Edger Hoover actually had massive lists of wiretaps, photos, documents, and reports on people, it was mostly done covertly and in the dark. They were also released to the public after all of this came to light. Case in point, the CHP was ordered in the sixties to perform covert surveillance on antiwar protesters, yet after the snooping was exposed, they actually released their findings to the public.

Like this current administration, Joe McCarthy was blatant and out in the open about it. He also compiled blacklists, wiretaps, and other such information but did it overtly, and actually, proudly. Like this current administration, instead of “terrorism”, his fear invoking word was “communism.” Just like this current crop of neo-cons, anyone who dared to question his findings, or methods had their patriotism questioned, had their livelihoods threatened, and was smeared in the public eye with a plethora of lies and innuendo. We now call that last part "swift boating."

Thoughts?

1. Shades of both...
His "war on terror" paranoia reminds me of McCarthy. The wiretapping business is right out of Hoover.

3. The thing is, McCarthy had people sold...
...on a bogus bill of goods that he was actually "protecting" us from communism, and the American people ate it up. Can you imagine what he could have done if an actual terrorist attack like 9-11 had happened back then beforehand, and he had that as ammo?
