Sensenbrenner rejects Senate Patriot deal
RAW STORY

Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Frank James Sensenbrenner (R - WI) has rejected a Patriot Act compromise reached by the Senate.

The Senate had agreed to extend controversial provisions of the Act six months, setting it to expire in the summer of 2006.

Instead, Sensenbrenner is calling for just a one month extension of the Act.

House debates on the subject are set to begin at 4 PM EST.

ABC
The Associated Press

WASHINGTON Dec 22, 2005 — House Judiciary Committee Chairman James Sensenbrenner threatened Thursday to block passage of six-month extension of the Patriot Act, Republicans officials said, leaving open the possibility that the anti-terror legislation enacted after the attacks of 2001 might expire at year's end.

A spokesman for the Wisconsin Republican declined comment.

Sensenbrenner's reticence sent the White House and congressional GOP leaders scrambling to prevent the expiration of the existing law, with most lawmakers already home for the holidays. One possibility included approval of a shorter extension, coupled with a decision to summon lawmakers back to the Capitol early next year.

3. Bullshit partisan manuevering.
Go ahead and give congress the choice between hastily voting it down or hastily extending it four years. It'll get voted down.

13. They want to keep it on the table before the next elections
When they lose congress, they'll never be able to make the PATRIOT act permanent. They want it to come up again before the next election. Frist can bring it up again and this is to ensure it happens at the right time... right after the next terror attack on American and before the next election.

Color me cynical.

22. Then, when the next attack comes, it can be blamed on us not
having the protection of the PA.

Allowing a six month extension gives too much time to actually investigate what is abusive and unnecessary and what actually does some good.

It is not the protections they are protecting -- it is the abuses.

8. Yea, kind of odd
The 6 month extension works out far better for the GOP, as they are trying to keep the debate over it fresh in voter's minds for 2006 elections. 1 month would be great for the Democrats, as the GOP will be pressured to hammer out some real safeguards.

24. I don't see it
That argument is predicated on an attack actually happening. As inbred and backwards as the GOP is, I doubt they would pin their strategy on such a low-probability event.

31. Hey, their whole world view is based on lowprobability events
like them winning elections. That's why they have to resort to stealing them.

But I see your point. Absent MIHOP or LIHOP, the chances are remote. The question is, are they desperate enough to leave the leave the country with the door unlocked and the key in the ignition?

10. They domestic spying hearings (NSA spies on citizens) hearings are going
to kill the Patriot Act once and for all, and Sensenbrenner knows this.

6. Good. I was worried that in 6 months
Congress would have forgotten all about the fact that Bush is illegally wiretapping us. Congress has a short attention span, but I don't think they're likely to forget in just 1 month.

9. If the Democrats were politically smart...
They would support Sensenbrenner on this. The majority of people do not support the Patriot Act. And as many Repubs are opposed as Democrats. But, I will not hold my breath. Democrats do not like to gamble and they would see that as a gamble.

17. I Think It's Too late For That...
they already caved on the six-month extension and the RW meme is that (even though they control nothing)the Dems are responsible for this "crisis" in the first place. The press would hack the Dems to pieces and give the Pugs yet another pass.

30. It's a distraction from Spying
plain and simple. Dems have to react. They have to lobby, they have make their case. And Dems are no good at reacting.

This will take the teeth out of the Spying. We simply don't have enough resources to make headway on all of the fronts that we are.

So, they want us to choose between:

ANWAR
The fouled up intelligence
The Patriot Act
Snoopgate
Rove
Iraq

etc.

It's just another distraction. And extension is an extension. If it's still a law by extension, it still "Works".

There is NO other reason.

Edited on Thu Dec-22-05 04:05 PM by neoblues
Simple as that, the shorter the extension the better.
(I wonder if we could extend it for 1 month, but make the implementation retroactive to two monthas ago--so that it actually expired 1 month ago already! )

28. Six mo. ext. would put the debate in the middle of the campaign season
They don't want to risk debating these issues in public in the middle of their 2006 campaigns.

So, does this now go back into a conference?
