Cuba offers to donate World Baseball Classic money to Katrina aid

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2269713

HAVANA -- Hours after U.S. baseball officials reapplied for a permit that would allow Cuba to join next year's inaugural World Baseball Classic, the island's communist government said Thursday night it would donate any money received at the tournament to hurricane victims.

Officials from Major League Baseball and the Major League Baseball Players Association reapplied Thursday to the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control, seeking permission for Cuba to play in the 16-team tournament, scheduled for March 3-20.

The permit is required because of U.S. laws and regulations governing certain transactions with Cuba, and the Bush administration last week denied the first request, seemingly because Cubans would have received money.

"Although we have never competed for money, in order to offer options the Cuban Baseball Federation would be willing for the money associated with participation in the classic to go to those displaced by Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans," a statement read on Cuban government television said.

Gotta love how Cuba is doing more for Katrina victims than the US is...

1. Castro, Chavez. Two 'evil doers' who seem to care more about the
American people than the asswipes in our own government.

This is a perfect demonstration of the word irony.

2. In George Bush's mind:
'We must bomb the Hell out of Cuba and wipe out that Tyrant Castro, so that communistic bastard does not gain any influence or support from my hurricane victims. If we don't stop his communistic terroristic ways, he'll take over our Gulf coast oil productions and charge undercutting inexpensive prices at the pump. Donny, get the plans to wipe Castro off the map, the American people that count do not need his help. Jeb can help make Cuba the 51st State, and ride it into the White House.'

3. Don't give a damn about Castro

but as a baseball fan, I would like to see Cuba in this "classic". They are known to have some great baseball players down there and it would be interesting to see their best against some of the best the rest of the world has to offer. After all, the Americans and Dominicans are thought to be the two best out there. Cuba may give some genuine competition. And that is a nice gesture by the Cuban Baseball Federation.

4. Things have gotten pretty rotten when...
...Castro and Chavez look positively humanitarian next to the shit-for-brains cold-blooded dictator we have running this place - George bu$h, who crams his own people into sportsplexes-come-deathtraps after a national disaster hoping they'll die because they're poor and black, and who spies on his own people, cuts welfare, medicare, medicaid benefits and heating assistance to the poor, elderly, and educational assistance to the young whilst giving tax cuts to the richest of the rich and spending endlessly on illegal wars.

This is what we've become.
