9. Yup
he was in the Hitler Youth when it was mandatory for young men of his age in Poland (is that the right country?). So it's not like he volunteered, but still....he was in the Hitler Youth, people!!!

12. I believe

he said he had an injury to his trigger finger so he could not be in the army. Is that true? I think I read it in Time or Newsweek so I think it is reputable.
Edit: it mentions this in the 3rd link above- a "badly infected finger".

13. i noticed that after he read the gospel (or finished his homily) i can't
remember exactly which, one of his papal aids brought him a glass of water from which he took a sip.

a most unusual occurrence during a mass. which caused me to wonder: is the pope in good health?

17. Dry throat?
I'm not much of a public speaker myself but if it was a long sermon perhaps he got a little parched.
Also, wasn't he supposed to be kind of an "interim" pope? I heard somewhere that they couldn't really make up their minds about the new pope so they picked a guy who was pretty old and probably wouldn't live a hell of a long time, so they had more time to think about it. Although that could be a big lie; I don't remember where I read that.

19. i read that too ... re: the election of pope benny, his age, & his hoped
for short time in the papacy...
but other than that glass of water ,which really breaks, in my mind at least, all of the ..... i don't know whats of the "mass can never be interrupted by anything" that we were taught as children, pope benny seems to be in good health.. dry throat is a possibility...the fact that they brought him a glass of water while he was still in the middle of saying mass, that is a never before seen act...
