Who has mostly stopped using the term "conservative"? I have...
I pretty much go with "Republican", "Bush supporter", "Right Winger", "Bushbot" etc.

I find that there is very little that the term "conservative" would accurately describe in the present day Republican Party.

3. You are right.
Conservative means something different than what today's Republican stands for. I wonder why real conservatives don't form another party and break away from the GOP who really stand for corruption and criminality in government.

7. I sure don't use "conservative" to describe the GOP
Those freaks are, at best, reactionary.

There is nothing inherently wrong with being conservative, in the traditional sense of that word. It implies caution and judicious action. True conservatives are reluctant to change, and that can be maddening, but they are not, as a rule, evil. True conservatives and true progressives can and have worked together for the betterment of this nation and the world. Sadly, there are few of either left on the national political stage.

The GOP is evil. No two ways about it. No way in hell are they conservative.

10. I love to take a verbal dump on the neocons and finish with a rant...
....with how they're destroying the party for the "real" conservatives. 'thugs get all twitchy when you say shit like that- they don't know how to defuse it. Try it sometime- they wind up looking as vexed as a poodle with two front halves trying to take a dump.

13. True, because they are not conservatives.
Edited on Sat Dec-24-05 09:53 PM by Neil Lisst
This new breed of Republican was born of the Gingrich Beer Hall grab of 1994. They're devoted to a very activist culture where those who fail to meet standards are criminalized or attacked, in any way possible. They don't adhere to traditional conservative ideals of budget or of foreign interventions. They are not conservative.

I call them rightwingers, because they are thoroughly fascist.

15. I use Conservative for Libertarians mostly
as they are more Conservative than Bush, who isn't really all that conservative.

I know a Conservative who thinks, looking at Bush from his perspective, that he about 80 percent wrong.

And he'd be offended if he was lumped in with "bushbots"

So yeah, it still has uses.

21. I was a conservative once, and had conservative friends
We believed in a free-market economy, fiscal sanity, and personal responsibility, all under a government that stayed out of peoples' personal lives.

There is nothing conservative, in these senses, about the current administration.

25. There used to be a strong "center right" contingent in this country
people like Eisenhower, Goldwater, Rockefeller, and even Nixon, to a certain extent, drew most of their support from fiscal conservatives who wanted to keep a strong federal government while allowing for free competition in the private-sector. Giuliani and Schwarzenegger are similar to these kinds of Republicans (I would have said that about McCain until recently).

Sadly, the Republican Party inherited the barrage of racists and George Wallace supporters who abandoned the Democrats in the civil rights era. Reagan put the final nail in the coffin by trolling the religious right for votes in the 1980s.
