MOSUL, Iraq - U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld wrapped up his visit to Iraq at a Christmas Eve dinner with American troops in Mosul, the country’s second largest city and one of its most volatile.

Escorted by Apache helicopters to the U.S. regional headquarters in Mosul, Rumsfeld lent a hand serving troops a dinner of lobster tails and steak.

Addressing troops later, he reflected on a year in which, he said, Iraqi security forces had assumed greater responsibilities.

“When you read things and hear things that express doubt about the future here in Iraq, or in Afghanistan, know that there have always been doubts expressed, there have always been those who have suggested that the cause could not be successful, that the cause would be lost,” he said.

“In fact it was the people who persevered that proved them wrong. The great sweep of human history is for freedom and we’re on the side of freedom.

“In the struggle between freedom and tyranny, freedom ultimately prevails.”

6. bad American humor.
but seriously, if I was away from my family on Christmas, out in the desert, I would want traditional Christmas Fare. Stuffing and Pumpkin pie. Candy canes and banana bread and that god awful jello salad someone always brings... the one with the marshmallows!

You know that lobster they are getting is that rubbery frozen stuff anyway. It's like chewing octopus. ick.

7. Howdy from the Arab Street, Dumsfeld
“In the struggle between freedom and tyranny, freedom ultimately prevails.”

Now let's just see what one of our Arab ALLIES, Egypt, thinks about the "freedom" we're bringing to Iraq. (I'm working in Egypt right now.)

Today's English-language paper features a cartoon with the title: FREE AND FAIR POLLS IN IRAQ

One character is an ugly (but funny) caricature of a Fox News-type media bimbette: blonde hair, huge breasts, pouty mouth, etc.

She's interviewing an equally hideous caricature of an American soldier.

The soldier is saying: "Instead of using ink to guarantee the transparency and fairness of the election, we'll cut the voter's finger off so he can't vote again."

(The cartoon originally appeared in the weekly magazine Faramawy.)
