My LTTE actually got printed in the Dallas Morning News
Edited on Sun Dec-25-05 10:12 AM by justabob
Of course it is showing up on Christmas Sunday, but that is ok. I didn't expect the DMN to even read it.... they did edit about a third of it away, but oh well. If you're interested

This is about democracy
http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/opinion/letters/stories/DN-3pspying_1225edi.ART.State.Edition1.3e63993.html

on edit: this is what I actually sent them, as opposed to what was printed:

Secret 'eavesdropping' is not ok... ever. There are a lot of reasons why, but I think the Fourth Ammendment to the US Constitution is the clearest, and most important one. Have you read the Constitution lately? I highly recommend a quick read.

I want to know why no one in the press has commented on the fact that during the conference Monday, Bush basically said he was above the law and that because he is president he can do whatever he wants. You realize he just declared himself dictator, don't you? He just threw 225+ years of American principles and tradition out the window, and did so proudly proclaiming his righteousness.

This issue is not about petty conservative/liberal squabbling. This is about the fundamental rights guaranteed to us all in the Bill of Rights. This is about democracy itself.

"The Constitution is not an instrument for the government to restrain the people, it is an instrument for the people to restrain the government -- lest it come to dominate our lives and interests." Patrick Henry

5. Very nice letter. . .
but I must admit I am dismayed by the utter adherence to fascism present in some of those other letters to the paper. And these are the people who call themselves PATRIOTS?

10. Your right I was living in Dallas during 79 and 80
about the time that every help wanted sign was followed with yankees need not apply or I'll hire a wet back before I'd hire a yankee, Very true blue red city, they'd gladly succeed from the union just for a chance to kill some liberal yankees. Not to say theres not good people in Dallas, but they hide pretty good, lol.

11. We've gotten a little better since then
and grown with more transplants from elsewhere, but it is a slow process. One interesting thing I have noticed in the past couple of months. There are almost no 'W' stickers on cars, way MORE 'M' stickers, "Yee Haw is not a foreign policy!", "Democracy is NOT a faith based initiative" etc

12. I also am "new" to Dallas, & see more anti-bush bumper stickers
Edited on Sun Dec-25-05 11:41 AM by Blaze Diem
I was suprised but also see less W stickers. I agree that there are many silent anti-Bush-ers in Texas. Yes, still the diehard pros, but they are in every state.
Great bumper sticker I saw travelling the 820 a few weeks ago.."Failure Fries"...with a big red X across the words "freedom fries".
I wanted to honk and wave and hug & kiss the driver of the Accord who proudly displayed his view, in Dallas Texas, no less.
Bless him and God Bless the "purple-ing of Texas.

Happy Christmas/Holidays!!
Blaze

p.s. I am proud of your DMNews letter..and Congrats on making a point loud enough to necessitate publishing!!

Keep writing..maybe a topic on the "purple-ing of Texas...HA that would make a few locals sqirm & writh, wouldn't it.

I Would love to meet with any other Dallas/Fort Worth DUers....let me know..thanks

13. Two other letters on that page: one very good and one from a moron
First the one from the moron, who surely also thinks our gov't arrests and holds without trial or access to a lawyer only guilty people, that our spies shut their ears and eyes as soon as they come across an "innocent" communication with no identifiable terrorist on either end, that all foreigners identified as terrorists are indeed terrorists, and that our gov't would never manufacture charges against a US citizen, even if the laws allowed it to do so. Sadly, through ignorance and/or a simple, trusting nature, these views are held by many on the right.
Editorial, column miss the point

Re: "Justice for all?" by Bob Herbert, Tuesday Viewpoints, and "Taking Liberties," Tuesday Editorials.

None of us have to worry that our phone conversations may be listened to – unless we are talking to a known terrorist in a foreign country. Why don't the headlines reflect the fact that we are monitoring conversations of foreign terrorists?

Hundreds of warrants have been obtained, indicating that when time is not an issue, that's what happens. In every war, we have made every effort to listen to foreign messages, and we certainly didn't go to court to get permission. Those efforts paid off by breaking German and Japanese codes.

No newspaper published that we had done so, and this information led to identifying foreign agents in this country – and we certainly didn't worry about infringing on anyone's civil liberties.

E.S. "Mike" Miles, Vernon

I like this one:
It's supposed to be hard

The suppression of individual liberties to make the government's job easier is not an option. Isn't this what our Constitution is designed to prevent? The government does not get to choose. It must fight the war on terror and protect individual liberties.

Harder, yes, but it's the price of liberty. Otherwise, what are we fighting for?

James Porst, Plano
