Don't fight over a 'holiday' greeting


"I ask my fellow Christians who are outraged by the alleged "war on Christmas" to please reconsider their priorities.

Remember that tens of thousands of our cousins, friends, neighbors and co-workers are living in tents, barns and sheds in subfreezing weather on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

The president and governor promised help was on the way, pronto! Almost four months later, thousands are still living in tents, barns and sheds. It's not going to be a very "Merry Christmas" for them.

Mississippi has had a tragic year and we badly need to heal. While our extended family is still hurting, some of us are wasting energy by mouthing indignation over which seasonal greeting we get from cashiers at Wal-Mart. Is the meaning of Christmas that shallow?

Surely, we can do more for our fellow man in this Christmas season than force minimum-wage, retail employees to parrot insincere Christmas greetings.

Recently, I saw again the classic A Charlie Brown Christmas, and one particular line spoke to me. Linus, speaking to Charlie Brown, says: "You're the only person who'd take a wonderful thing like Christmas and turn it into a problem."

I'm not a Christian, but I've always respected their right to celebrate. The truth, however, is that the Church co-opted the Winter Solstice celebration from the Pagans long, long ago.

This is a holiday season that belongs to everyone, not just fundy xians.

I simply cannot believe how completely the misery has been forgotten-even THIS close to home! You all are in my thoughts constantly.

I'm really in a much better place than many. I have a good support system here and on DU, I just don't want folks to lose sight of the needs of thousands of others here. I know congress has approved the funding, but we have to be vigilant. The incompetence of FEMA is caused by the corporate greed and the lining of cronies pockets. They don't care that they get the job done right or that the money and efforts go to those that need it most, they only care about being made rich by our tax dollars and the relief money.

The piratization will allow for the rape of the survivors if we don't pay attention.

I was trying to word a LTTE about this but was too distracted with all the holiday stuff going on to pull my thoughts together. What you said was perfect.

If I were a conservative, I'd be embarassed that my side was quibbling over something so shallow and so obviously meant to divide people, and at Christmas! They should be ashamed. I hope lots of people read your letter.
