WASHINGTON (AFP) - US military prisons in Iraq are overcrowded but the military is refusing to hand over detainees until Iraqi prisons meet US custody standards, American military authorities reportedly said.

"Bottom line, we will not pass on facilities or detainees until they meet the standards we define and that we are using today," Major General John Gardner, head of US military prisons in Iraq, told the New York Times in an interview published Sunday.

Two recent raids on Iraqi government jails have uncovered scores of abused prisoners. US military experts have joined Iraqi officials in inspecting Iraq's detention centers.

The Times said three of the main US-run prisons in Iraq are severely overcrowded despite a 50 million dollar expansion program.

It said the 14,055 held in four US prisons this week are 20 percent over the capacity of the prisons and represent an increase from about 8,000 in January. About 3,100 are waiting for Iraq's new judiciary to hear their cases.
