Shocked some fundie relatives at our Christmas dinner today.
Mother in Law lives in nursing home, so a bunch of us went there for the noon meal - a big buffet on several holidays during the year. While eating, the subject turned to movies, so I mentioned I had read good reviews for 'Brokeback Mountain.' Sister in law said she really wanted to see that because of the reviews also. I asked her if she knew it was about a love story between two cowboys. The silence was deafening. Niece said they are all going to hell. I asked who - the movie makers, all cowboys, exactly who are you deciding will spend their eternity where? Another long quiet, and Ms usnret88 nudged me with an elbow, so I went and got us a slice of pie.

3. I know it's got something to do with that fundie wench...
on one of those reality shows...

but could someone PLEASE explain the "gargoyles!" joke? Some of us don't watch horseshit television like that.

5. I don't watch it either, I just read about it somewhere
I think she was freaking out because she had to go live with people who weren't Christians (I'm not really sure why she had to go there) and she thought everything was evil. I don't know which show it even is but probably something dumb.

7. Are you referring to Trading Spouses?
It is a reality show where the "mom" of one family swaps with the "mom" of another and deals with the household for a week, I think (I've only read about it). Stephanie Miller keeps playing a clip from one show where a fundie mom freaks out and screams because the other family "is not CEEEEEERistian!" and rants about the dark side, etc.

I just read about it on one of my friends' blogs- I didn't watch the original show. Sounds ridiculous. What a weird name- Trading Spouses. Nuts.

27. About "Trading Spouses"
If that woman is truly Christian, she wouldn't be trading spouses to begin with. See, I happen to believe that if one makes a commitment such as marriage, one should at least try and stick with it. That means no trading spouses. Otherwise it sounds like "Divorce Court" or something like that to me. Just sayin'.

Entertainment is entertainment, but really, we can do better than this!
I wonder why she even agreed to it if she was so upset about other people's viewpoints or opinions. Obviously, for the money$$!

35. They just change for a week or two
and not in a Biblical way.

It's an interestiung show. They take two families who live very different lives and swap moms for a week and see if things changed in the families after it's over.

Mostly pretty positive experiences I'd say from the ones I've watched which is just a handful.

10. "gargoyles"
Said fundie wench was horrified that the family had gargoyles on their porch. Her pronunciation was more like "Gore-gyles".

I don't watch reality TV, but my daughter does and clued me in to watch those two episodes of Trading Spouses. I'm glad she did, because they were very funny.

4. Thanks. Every time there is a family gathering, I get a lecture on
how to behave. I'm allowed to torment just a little, but cannot bring anyone to tears. After I came back from the pie table, there was a brief discussion of jeremiah and the pagan tree, which generated another jab in the ribs.

Must have been ok, 'cause there was no lecture on the way home, and we watched 'Manchurian Candidate' together. Denzel Washington is my favorite actor btw.

6. My whole family is liberal
which I am very grateful for. However, my fiancee has one fundie aunt and family who go to one of those speaking-in-tongues churches and were talking about how the tsunami was a sign of the apocalypse (!). I don't know them well enough to be too annoying, but I did get into it with one of them about the death penalty (which they are for and I am not).

which went promptly into the trash. Man it's tough being related to fundies ey?

On the other hand my niece (on my side of the family) came out just before the holidays. We all told her her sexual preference matters not and that her happiness is our wish - (grand-parents included.) She is fortunate considering what many teens have to deal with in telling their families.

How was the pie ? ....

It is amazing how many people HATE freedom .....

They can preach all they want about 'protecting freedom', but if THEY cannot tolerate two grown men or women making a solemn personal choice to live their life as a homosexual, they they CANNOT respect freedom ....

It is all about Freedom .... They actually hate it ....

Thank the stars for Pie, though .... was it Pecan ? ... Cocoanut Creme ? .... Punkin ? ...

21. Only thing that came near to setting me off was
my brother in law who saw the light a couple years ago. His church and the guy he works with all collect bigtime from Faith Based Initiative handouts. This is how dubby has brainwashed them with the cash flow.
I'm Christian but do not wear it on my sleeve and told him that it was not right for dubby to channel taxpayer money to his supposed base.

They are all republicans and a lot are home-schooled. Sorry to those here that home-school! BIL did admit that they are in a bubble. He asked about some flight over the Bermuda Triangle and got a Wha?. So he mentioned, ya know Aliens. Another What? 17 year old girl had no base for even understanding his minor references.

At things like this, all you need to do is ask the question. You don't need a reply.

Going for another piece of pie was a great idea. If you'd have waited for the answer, it would likely have put you off your feed.

Screw them. Fundies think that everyone will be paralyzed by their condemnation. They have no qualms about voicing their idiotic opinions and they're not used to being confronted with a differing opinion. In the cuckoo religious social activities they participate in, liberals are presented as deviants to the flock. And strawman "liberal" arguments on various social topics are teed up and knocked down by the preacher. Basically, they're warned not to think for themselves lest they be kicked out of the warm bosom of their church community. When the air in the building is thick with the potent combination of the fear of ostracism and the joy of being a member of the group, that's when the money plate gets passed around.

They're stupid.

They're mean.

And they're wrong.

So who cares what they think? You have to put up with their offensive views on homosexuality because they're family. Why shouldn't they have to put up with your views that offend them?

33. My dad and his wife were at Christmas dinner at my Dem daughter's
house. We were talking about my trip to Paris last year and I remarked how much Napoleon's influence was still all around the city, especially in the art work. My dad said that the artists and musicians of that time all supported Napoleon until he started on his course of domination of other countries, and made so many foolish mistakes which cost his army and his country dearly. I looked at my daughter and said, "Gee, who does that remind you of?" My dad's wife said, "It reminds me of bush, especially since we've learned how unprepared he was to invade Iraq. (This woman adamantly supported bush during the elections!) My daughter lifted her glass and said, "God Bless Us, One and All." I lifted my glass and said, "God Help Us, One and All." And we all giggled, including dad and wife. And then we moved on to another subject. But it was a priceless moment.
