Russia Brings New Nukes On-Line
http://news.scotsman.com/international.cfm?id=2459162005

VLADIMIR Putin has sparked fears of a new arms race between Russia and the United States by deploying a nuclear ballistic strike force system that officials made clear could penetrate US anti- missile defences.

On Christmas Eve, the Russian army activated a new fleet of Topol-M missiles that can fit a nuclear warhead and travel 6,000 miles, changing trajectory to foil any enemy interception device.

<--snip-->

General Nikolai Solovtsov, commander of the Russian missile forces, has mobilised a new battalion for the Topol-M missiles, which have a capacity for a one megatonne impact - 75 times the power of the 1945 Hiroshima bomb.

<--snip-->

While Russia had disbanded two missile divisions last year, it has now formed more than 20 new units - in the fastest increase of nuclear spending since the run-up to the Cuban missile crisis.

<--snip-->

But now the economy is flush with new oil wealth, the nuclear missile programme has been revived and was last month allocated a £1 billion budget increase from the Kremlin. This has boosted Mr Putin's popularity.

1. Personally I think
a well armed Russia and a healthy Russian economy is a good thing for the world. Even America.

3. It's definitely good for defense contractors
Let's face it, none of these weapons have any benefit for the citizens.

5. I think that mutally assured destruction
was a pretty successful deterent, so maybe they will have less chance of dying in a nuke if their country matches ours militarily.

Things haven't been going so well for the world since the US became the only super power.

9. You know what happens when you are king of the hill
Once oil gets scarce enough I believe we'll see these weapons in action.

7. I just hope that.....
if Washington, DC thinks sees the necessity to put out propaganda to gain public (mostly Republican) support, that they don't use the same old stereotyping of Russian people. They used to always show bushy eye-browed, evil looking people and tell America, "These people hate the freedoms you enjoy here in America (less and except being spied upon secretly by the government) and they want to kill you because of it."

Sounds like the same, tired old BS to me.

4. Currently....
...the United States is refurbishing the nation's stockpile of nukes from the 1970s and '80s and are looking at new technology to build more nukes that are more accurate and do less damage.
Just what we needed, another "Cold War" to balance out our "Global Warming" problem.

10. Gee that hundred billion dollars spent on missle defense
Oh well it went to GOP Contributers so this is in reality good news for Republicans. Now they can allot another hundred billion for another scheme to "protect" America. As long as Tax payer money ends up in GOP hands it doesn't matter one whit what happens...

11. So
... by deploying a nuclear ballistic strike force system that officials made clear could penetrate US anti- missile defences.

The US has never been able to stop ballistic missiles. The no-telling-how-much-it-cost missile defense system WarCriminal deployed was done knowing that it did not work and would not work for decades and now the Russians have mad it more impossible. So this is nothing new.

And boy, who would ever think a military would use technology to defend itself with only one mad superpower on the planet that increased the largest military budget on earth by 40% in 5 years and uses napalm, white phosphorus, and depleted uranium and torture and assassination employing a press that hides it while it is all in plain sight.

An arms race is just another failure of WarCriminal while in residence.

12. I don't exactly blame Putin for doing this
Let's get right to the point: the only way to keep Bush out of your oil-rich country is to be armed to the fucking teeth. And Russia is an oil-rich nation.
