Cheney's latest distortion: Zogby's Iraqi public opinion "poll".

WASHINGTON, 22 October 2003 — Early in President Bush’s recent public relations campaign to rebuild support for the US war effort in Iraq, Vice President Cheney appeared on “Meet the Press.” Attempting to make the case that the US was winning in Iraq, Cheney made the following observations:

“There was a poll done, just random in the last week, first one I’ve seen carefully done; admittedly, it’s a difficult area to poll in. Zogby International did it with American Enterprise magazine. But that’s got very positive news in it in terms of the numbers it shows with respect to the attitudes to what Americans have done.

In fact, Zogby International (ZI) in Iraq had conducted the poll, and the American Enterprise Institute (AEI) did publish their interpretation of the findings. But the AEI’s “spin” and the vice president’s use of their “spin” created a faulty impression of the poll’s results and, therefore, of the attitudes of the Iraqi people.

For example, while Cheney noted that when asked what kind of government they would like, Iraqis chose “the US... hands down,” in fact, the results of the poll are actually quite different. Twenty-three percent of Iraqis say that they would like to model their new government after the US; 17.5 percent would like their model to be Saudi Arabia; 12 percent say Syria, 7 percent say Egypt and 37 percent say “none of the above.” That’s hardly “winning hands down.”

I know, nothing new here.

But this article is a firm indictment of the American Enterprize Institute (AEI). This so-called "Think Tank" is nothing more than a propaganda organ for BushCo.

even mention that something like 67% of Iraqis preferred Jacque Chirac to George Bush.

see, we twisted this poll and it shows so - or, well, I'me here to tell you so. Oh, and by the way, George W. Bush* is in charge - honest - he sez so" - and then Cheney codes because he is snickering so hard, attemptign to supress a belly laugh.

It is disturbing that the AEI and the vice president could get it so wrong. Their misuse of the polling numbers to make the point that they wanted to make, resembles the way critics have noted that the administration used “intelligence data” to make their case to justify the war.

While I admire the patriotism and courage it took for Mr. Zogby to stand up against the Bush-controlled media and give the true poll results, I don't know why he's being so polite about it. What you do you mean, they "misused" the data and "got it wrong"? THEY DELIBERATELY FUCKING LIED, and for the sickest, most disgusting reason possible--to protect THEIR asses, not the soldiers', and certainly not "the American people's"!

I keep waiting for the gloves to come off, as it were, and they never do. As long as we're "nice," and they aren't, we're going to lose every time.

I hate to say it, but the Democratic party needs more evil thugs willing to get their hands dirty. We are not going to win this one by trying to stay above the fray.

It doesn't matter if they win with 42% or with 88%, no matter what they will treat it like a total victory.

They have no interest in protecting the rights of the minority (and, in cases like selection 2000, the rights of the majority).


The best example of this attitude can be seen in how they are handling the war. We haven't completed ANY of our objectives (Saddam and Osama are not in custody, and the Iraqis are a long way from governing themselves) and Americans are still dying, but conservatives still treat this like a landslide victory, and a monumental symbol of their success.


The most dangerous part of this philosophy is that winning is not enough. Due to their desire for total domination, they will eventually seek to wipe out all of their opposition in order to promote their false image of total victories.

This tactic can be seen exercised all over the media, with the constant discrediting and shameful attacks upon anyone who speaks out.

Moreover, the re-redistricting epitomizes the Republican fascination with complete domination. In Texas, the Republicans took their slim majority, read it as the will of a substantial majority of Texans to pass Republican legislation, and used their power to further whittle down their opposition and expand their margin of victory.


This sick fascination with winning is why Republicans play dirty, and is why we must never let our guard down against them.
