I don't see why not. We've already established a precedent by putting other heads of state on trial (Noriega, Milosovic, Hussein). He's committed some very serious, heinous crimes already. It would have to be a UN tribunal, otherwise whoever is the next president might just decide to issue a pardon. How sweet would that be, having Bush, Cheney, Condi, Rummy, Ashcroft, etc rotting in some European prison (although Abu Gharib would be more fitting).

3. Even if he isn't impeached.
I'm not sure what constitutes an acceptable case at the Hague. But I have hopes that the administration will be standing trial there.

25. I was just going to say the same thing.
While we have a good case for impeachment, I think there's an open and shut case for war crimes!!! Plus, there's so much evidence out there that they can't destroy and they wouldn't have control over the players, as they would here with all the Republican puppets on strings.

4. until we do this, we're no better than any other #1 nation
only if we do this do we finally prove our rhetoric, that we are a nation whose greatness does not lie purely in its military and economic dominance of the planet; that we hold ourselves to a higher standard; and that no one -- NO ONE -- is above the law.

5. HELL YEAH!!!
If we ever want to gain back the respect of the world, we MUST show the world that we have every intention of holding these thugs accountable. If we ever want justice for ourselves, we must deliver it for others. It's a two way street, and these pigs are not above the law, U.S. or international.

6. Shrub has already been charged, multiple times
The problem is, these charges have failed to result in an indictment (ie a ruling that the charges have merit.) That will never, ever happen in the United States, and kidnapping even an ex president would constitute an act of war (ignore the fact that the US has kidnapped several sitting heads of state, and assassinated many more.)

21. I'll take that bet.
Unless we get a whole new batch of Democrats in the house it won't happen. The ones we have in the house now just don't have what it takes to impeach, even if they get the majority. The only way the present Democratic representatives would vote for impeachment is if the Republicans started it.

I do hope I am wrong, but I doubt it.

then flush their bibles. Waterboard the sons of bitches, forever. Even then it's not enough to repay the once great America for what they have done. Ugly bags of water, all of them.

15. Democratic leaders will never do that
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 02:06 PM by Selatius
I guarantee it. If we sent him to the Hague, it will set a precedent for all future leaders, and people who have power are too often naturally averse to being held accountable for their actions. I doubt they will ever approve such a move.

They may impeach him and remove him from office, but I doubt they would put Bush before the Hague or make him serve prison time.

18. That's exactly the kind of 'precedent' that needs setting!
If there's anything we don't need in this country, it's someone who expects to be immune from prosecution for their acts while in elected office! I'm for dragging that bastard to the Hague by the heels. For those who think it'd be a "act of war" ... let it be Americans that do it, then. I'll even volunteer.

29. People like you would do it. Not so sure about Democratic politicians tho
Many are simply aiming on holding their seats for the '06 elections, not looking for a constitutional showdown. Why else would half of them cave on issues such as the bankruptcy reform bill?

20. That is What the International Criminal Court in the Hague is For
In the Hague, in a building known as the Peace Palace:

sits the International Criminal Court:

If convicted, Bush**, Cheney, et. al. would be sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in the prison wing of the peace palace:

22. Impeachment is unlikely
unless we have a shift in the balance of power in the 2006 midterms. Regardless of impeachment, Bush should be tried for war crimes. My guess is that his ability to travel outside the United States after his term is over will be greatly restricted. He will no longer have the protection of his office to keep him from being brought to trial.

24. He HAS to be charged and tried, and if found guilty...punished.
These people HAVE to be charged and tried. And if found guilty, punished to the full extent of the law. No more "pardons (ala Nixon--ala Bush I and his crooks);" no more "understandings" (ala Iran/Contra and Reagan); no more "deals" (ala Ford and Nixon). If these thugs and cutthroats get away with it again, they'll just come back later with more of the same, perhaps worse (if that's possible). THEY MUST BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE AND PUNISHED TO THE FULL EXTENT OF THE LAW, otherwise they will do it again...and again...and again...!!!!! :grr:

26. the Hague, the Hague?
Edited on Tue Dec-27-05 04:21 PM by darkworkz
uh, folks that keep bringing the Hague up should explain to the rest of us law abiding Citizens why we should forgo our laws and Federal Constitution and send (soon to be) Impeached, tried, convicted, US Citizens to a world(?) court, that's not in our constitution?

Are you saying that the US Constitution is not sufficient to hold law breakers accountable? Is there another agenda you're not wishing to talk about so you just say 'Hague' and hope others get on the bandwagon with you? Or do you just feel that we should do it to "get along" with the rest of the world?

It appears that there's growing sentiment in the US Citizenry to exercise the law, by and for the people. And the Hague doesn't fit in that equation.

Perhaps I'm missing something and the Hague supporters could enlighten us on how US law is deficient and the Hague is so much better?

on edit: If memory serves, the US Constitution was written, ratified, and implemented long before the Hague. So purely from a historical point (other Hague advocates points not withstanding) the US Constitution is the precedent and standard by which this situation must be ruled.

28. Nothing will change in America unless he is brought up on war crime
charges - all of the Bush Regime must stand war crime charges (and they must be convicted - otherwise we know the trial is a farce as Bush IS guilty beyond all doubt)...otherwise America will once again sweep crimes under the rug ...and as long as America maintains that sick need to hide her crimes, she will NEVER be the America she could be.

30. I don't think it will happen
I doubt the process could ever get as far as a tribunal. I'd be willing to bet (though it can't be proved) that the BFEE has, or is able to get, the goods on anyone who might be a threat to their manifest right to destroy and plunder for profit. Bush has the NSA working for him pro bono, for cripes sake!

Threats always work nicely too.

I think this Bush dictatorship thing will have to run its course, and allot more people will suffer before its over. I hope I'm wrong. Anyway, the silver lining in all my cynicism is that I've been wrong before - gloriously wrong!
