Email attachment - What do you think it means?
I received an email from my insurance company with the following disclaimer at the bottom:

We care about your privacy. You should know that e-mail
messages sent in clear text over the public Internet may be
observed by a third party.

Who do you think they were referring to with that message?

I have never noticed an attachment worded this way before, not to say it didn't exist. Could they be warning the recipients of the message that George is reading your email?

2. It's not "Who" but "What"

Who do you think they were referring to with that message?

You do realize that every major ISP has a "sniffer" that looks at all the email sent though their networks set up by the FBI ?? Don't you?

It goes back way before bush. Google "Carnivore" or "DragonWare Suite"

They can look at:
# Which Web sites you visit
# What you look at on the site
# Whom you send e-mail to
# What's in the e-mail you send
# What you download from a site
# What streaming events you use, such as audio, video and Internet telephony
# Who visits your site (if you have a Web site)

BTW, Hello and Happy New Year to the geek sitting down in the stinky FBI basement monitoring this site and thread.

3. Because it's true.
An email in transit is rather easily interceptable by the operators of any of the networks used to transmit your message between your mail server and the recipient's. It's not just a Shrub thing - it really is pretty easy to do. If it's truly private, encrypt it - use PGP (relatively easy to use, but $$$) or GPG (free, but lotsa luck setting it up)

4. I realize that, I was posting this because I don't recall seeing such
a disclaimer before the spy gate story was exposed.

6. Are you sure the email is really from
your insurance company?

I've been getting bogus emails from various sources which at first glance look like they ought to be legitimate. But on closer look, there's something sufficiently fishy that I delete them. Some, as I recall, even contain a similar kind of "disclaimer". Bottom line is, if you didn't initiate the contact, if you were not already expecting an email from the insurance company, ignore it, delete it, do not respond. Don't fill out any kind of quiz or customer survey. If you have any questions, call your insurance agent.
