Kennedy Center Honors on CBS!
Robert Redford being serenaded by Willy Nelson, Paul Newman giving him a tribute, Tony Bennett being introduced by Quincy Jones, and about to sing.
Doesn't Tony Bennett look like Leon Panetta?
This is a good show, and Tina Turner's also there!
Trust me! 8:30pmCT now; it's been on for 1/2 hour.

8. A Mere Glimpse of Bush,Laura, Cheney, Lynne
ruins it for me. I'd turn it off!

Besides my public access channel is showing Dave Matthews live at Red Rocks. I'll get my talent elsewhere - until Bush is gone...can watch KCH

5. I though Bush looked very sour when Newman was going on
about Redford being an activist and "fierce environmentalist". And I wondered how Redford coped with having to be so near to Bush.

I've never commented on the perception of a Stepford Wife that I've read, but this show
showed her as not changing her demeanor, at all! :scared:

13. No "honor" is worth it if it means
being in the same room with the chimp. I wish guys like Nicholson, Beatty, and now Redford, who've received Kennedy Center Honors during the Bush Crime Family reign of terror would have said, "I'm sorry, but it's against my principles to attend a function with a known war criminal mass murderer. I have to decline for now."

much less have to take pics with them. Did you see Redford w/ Condi pic? It sent chills down my spine to see him with that mass murderer by his side.

Don't you think the Kennedy clan would have granted Redford, Beatty, and Nicholson these honors a few years down the road had they requested it.

questioned what this was all about before excepting...he wanted to make sure the administration had nothing to do with the award but knew had to deal with the state dinner stuff... Also read that Newman refused to attend any of the dinners/events - didn't want to be a part anywhere near them...go Paul!!

No Place for a Poet at a Banquet of Shame

Sharon Olds

For reasons spelled out below, the poet Sharon Olds has declined to attend the National Book Festival in Washington, which, coincidentally or not, takes place September 24, the day of an antiwar mobilization in the capital. Olds, winner of a National Book Critics Circle Award and professor of creative writing at New York University, was invited along with a number of other writers by First Lady Laura Bush to read from their works. Three years ago artist Jules Feiffer declined to attend the festival's White House breakfast as a protest against the Iraq War ("Mr. Feiffer Regrets," November 11, 2002). We suggest that invitees to this year's event consider following their example.--The Editors

Laura Bush
First Lady
The White House

Dear Mrs. Bush,

I am writing to let you know why I am not able to accept your kind invitation to give a presentation at the National Book Festival on September 24, or to attend your dinner at the Library of Congress or the breakfast at the White House.

In one way, it's a very appealing invitation. The idea of speaking at a festival attended by 85,000 people is inspiring! The possibility of finding new readers is exciting for a poet in personal terms, and in terms of the desire that poetry serve its constituents--all of us who need the pleasure, and the inner and outer news, it delivers.

And the concept of a community of readers and writers has long been dear to my heart. As a professor of creative writing in the graduate school of a major university, I have had the chance to be a part of some magnificent outreach writing workshops in which our students have become teachers. Over the years, they have taught in a variety of settings: a women's prison, several New York City public high schools, an oncology ward for children. Our initial program, at a 900-bed state hospital for the severely physically challenged, has been running now for twenty years, creating along the way lasting friendships between young MFA candidates and their students--long-term residents at the hospital who, in their humor, courage and wisdom, become our teachers.

When you have witnessed someone nonspeaking and almost nonmoving spell out, with a toe, on a big plastic alphabet chart, letter by letter, his new poem, you have experienced, close up, the passion and essentialness of writing. When you have held up a small cardboard alphabet card for a writer who is completely nonspeaking and nonmoving (except for the eyes), and pointed first to the A, then the B, then C, then D, until you get to the first letter of the first word of the first line of the poem she has been composing in her head all week, and she lifts her eyes when that letter is touched to say yes, you feel with a fresh immediacy the human drive for creation, self-expression, accuracy, honesty and wit--and the importance of writing, which celebrates the value of each person's unique story and song.

So the prospect of a festival of books seemed wonderful to me. I thought of the opportunity to talk about how to start up an outreach program. I thought of the chance to sell some books, sign some books and meet some of the citizens of Washington, DC. I thought that I could try to find a way, even as your guest, with respect, to speak about my deep feeling that we should not have invaded Iraq, and to declare my belief that the wish to invade another culture and another country--with the resultant loss of life and limb for our brave soldiers, and for the noncombatants in their home terrain--did not come out of our democracy but was instead a decision made "at the top" and forced on the people by distorted language, and by untruths. I hoped to express the fear that we have begun to live in the shadows of tyranny and religious chauvinism--the opposites of the liberty, tolerance and diversity our nation aspires to.

I tried to see my way clear to attend the festival in order to bear witness--as an American who loves her country and its principles and its writing--against this undeclared and devastating war.

But I could not face the idea of breaking bread with you. I knew that if I sat down to eat with you, it would feel to me as if I were condoning what I see to be the wild, highhanded actions of the Bush Administration.

What kept coming to the fore of my mind was that I would be taking food from the hand of the First Lady who represents the Administration that unleashed this war and that wills its continuation, even to the extent of permitting "extraordinary rendition": flying people to other countries where they will be tortured for us.

So many Americans who had felt pride in our country now feel anguish and shame, for the current regime of blood, wounds and fire. I thought of the clean linens at your table, the shining knives and the flames of the candles, and I could not stomach it.

Sincerely,
SHARON OLDS

I've gotten used to the fact that there's not much worth watching on the idiot box so I don't bother even checking any more.

Sorry I missed it.

28. I watched- thought it was great. Missed Redford, unfortunately.
What I saw was tremendous. Also found it interesting to watch Bush's expressions the few times they panned him during Kd Lang and Melissa Ethridge- both of whom were fabulously breathtaking. Couldn't help wondering what he was thinking but didn't dwell too long since I didn't want to miss a moment of the show. Also saw his reaction / oogling of Beyonce, who was also amazing. It would have been a perfect show had the Bushes not been there.

29. Tonight really showcased the stark difference between a REAL
presidential family represented so gracefully by Caroline Kennedy
and the FAKE president, showing major discomfort all through the
evening (including lots of jaw twitching). It was obvious to me he
did not want to be there (except the "wow" moment when Beyonce walked
on stage).

I've watched for several years and will never forget how much Bill Clinton LOVED to be there, really enjoying every minute with all his heart. That was always obvious to me.

It was a great show again this year.

30. Right On, Babylon Sister
This is one of the only TV events worth watching.

In the era of Fox Reality Shows, the Kennedy Center Awards are an inspiration and a reminder of what is still good and beatiful here in the US.

I LOVE watching it during the Bush years, because I love the irony. It's the KENNEDY Center, for chrissake. This has NOTHING to do with the current administration. It has everything to do with JFK and his legacy. Accepting these awards in no way suggests support for the current administration.

Always and forever, the best and the brightest vision of America is found in the minds and dreams of progressives, liberals, artists, democrats. God bless Tina Turner and Robert Redford. I was thrilled to see them honored.

Here's the great moment from tonight. During the film honoring Robert Redford, a LOT of time was devoted to the film "All the President's Men" and Watergate! You have to love that. I'm sure Dubya did, too.

We got Willie Nelson, Paul Newman, Tina, Robert, Alec Baldwin, and on and on. It was a lovely time.

I wish this country understood the vital importance of the arts, and embraced them and supported them. This is one evening every year where you get to celebrate that.

was singing about cowboys and fake cowboy * had the most nasty look on his face!
No doubt * is disgusted with Wille and his biodiesel...since it might cut into the BFEE's profits! :eyes:

Also wanted to add that it lifted my spirits to see Newman and Redford-both excellent examples of the kind of people who should be leading this country!
