Question: reliable resources for studying U.S. and world history
I've been meaning to do this for some time - especially since joining DU - and this quote from Noordam's banner-sig reminded me that I need to get started right away:

My question: What are some of the best online resources for studying U.S. history (primarily) and world history?

I'd like to read history from the liberal/progressive viewpoint, and I'd like to read it online because I can't afford to buy any books right now (and the local library is so poorly stocked, it's not even worth the trip). But if anyone can recommend a particularly helpful book, I'll put it on my list.

Any links to sites that would help will be greatly appreciated.

1. "A People's History of the United States: 1492-Present" by Howard Zinn
THE definitive tome on viewing US history from a progressive perspective, bar none.

One of the most important books anyone can ever read, IMHO.

6. I'm familiar with Zinn, & I also like "Lies My Teacher Told Me "
"Lies My Teacher Told Me : Everything Your American History Textbook Got Wrong" by James W. Loewen. It's at Amazon (natch):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0684818868/102-3726093-1538526?v=glance

This is a good rundown on why Americans are generally so ill-informed about the world, and what the purpose of the social studies classes we all suffer through (because we realize they're bullshit) actually is.

I'd be interested to hear of any world history books that get away from the Euro/Am centric viewpoint.

7. For a good world history online
Try The Encyclopedia of World History. It's mainly facts, rather than interpretation (from any viewpoint), but does a good job of covering all parts of the world.
