"Religious Conservatives: Schiavo Win Opens Doors".....Look out.
I had posted this within another post, then I realized it was the main story. My daughter just called and saw an article about this in her TX city, how the religious right is planning on using this case as to win others and the election.

Religious Conservatives: Schiavo Win Opens Doors

SNIP...."Religious conservatives say that with an arsenal of prayer vigils, Christian radio broadcasts and thousands of e-mail messages to Florida lawmakers, they played a pivotal role in the legislative battle this week over whether to feed a brain-damaged woman who has been kept alive artificially for 13 years.

Now some conservatives are hoping to use similar tactics to help them challenge court rulings they opposed in other states.

Randall Terry, founder of the anti-abortion group Operation Rescue, said he and other conservatives intend to use what they consider a stunning victory here to pressure lawmakers elsewhere to chip away at court rulings allowing abortion and banning prayer and the posting of the Ten Commandments in public schools, among other issues.

"Finally, a governor and legislature had the courage to stand up to judicial despots because of an overwhelming call by the public," he said....."END SNIP

The legislators here voted for it, no questions, just voted. Then they find out the public here in this conservative area is against it. 76% oppose Jeb's intervention.

Be on the look-out for this type of stuff now.

1. sanctity of life
I asked someone today if they thought this would cause Jeb and others on the right to reconsider their support of the death penalty (after all, every life is sacred). They looked at me like I was speaking Mongolian.

2. From what I've read,
polls show that a majority of Americans support choice in abortion and the option for the cessation artificial life support to those in a persistant vegitative state.

Reminds me of a bumper sticker that I saw years ago that read: "The Moral Majority is Neither"

5. They are united...
Religious conservatives say that with an arsenal of prayer vigils, Christian radio broadcasts and thousands of e-mail messages to Florida lawmakers, they played a pivotal role in the legislative battle this week...

They are well-organized and they are united in their stand for or against any given issue. I wonder what would have happened if the Florida legislators had received a deluge of e-mails and phone calls from people who opposed keeping this woman alive through tubes?

I really don't think the religious right should get too cocky just yet because this particular issue is one on which a lot of people, myself included, have mixed feelings and really not enough medical expertise to have any informed thoughts. At the same time, we all should note:
• they are organized,
• they know exactly what they want,
• they let their voices be heard by those in a position to act, and,
• they speak with one voice.

8. The problem is, tho . . .
Those of us who believe it's a personal or private matter don't have the motivation to call/write/bitch/pray/protest like the fundies, who believe there should be government intervention.

9. Is it only the "fundies"?
Edited on Fri Oct-24-03 04:56 PM by Marianne
I thought there were other religious groups involved in this such as the Catholic right to life groups.

Isn't the term "fundy" rather inflammatory?
