In the quiet town of Jefferson, Wisconsin, there's a battle being waged between union workers and meat-processing giant Tyson Foods that may be one of the last stands in a war on wages in America. In Jefferson, as around the nation, workers are facing corporate efforts to cut pay and benefits, which could lead to more American families struggling to stay out of poverty. NOW profiles this contentious and emotional labor strike, which pits a small town against the world's largest meat and poultry producer-and may foretell a bleak future for American labor and the survival of the middle class.

Bill Moyers talks to Joseph C. Hough, president of the Union Theological Seminary, where his teaching and research interests are in social ethics, theological education, the Church and ministry. Hough discusses where politics and religion intersect and why he thinks it is the duty of Christians, Jews and Muslims to join together and fight growing economic inequality in America. Hough has sharp words for politicians who tout their religions, but don't apply its teachings to actions that could help those in need. "I'm getting tired of people claiming they're carrying the banner of my religious tradition when they're doing everything possible to undercut it. And that's what's happening in this country right now, " says Hough, "The policies of this country are disadvantaging poor people every day of our lives.Ó

David Brancaccio interviews Sarah Chayes, the former NPR correspondent who reported from the Balkans, North Africa, the Middle East, and most recently covered the war in Afghanistan. Sarah took a break from radio to contribute directly to the post-conflict country and become the Kandahar director for the nonprofit, non-governmental organization, Afghans for Civil Society. Chayes updates viewers on the current situation in Afghanistan and the plight of Afghan women.

I started a duplicate thread about Joe Hough. I have never heard of this guy before but I was really impressed by him. I have already bookmarked the transcript of that interview on my browser.

Any deeply pious religious figure who basically calls Tom DeLay a lousy Christian is OK in my book.

He's United Church of Christ, a wonderfully social justice oriented denomination.

It goes sometimes too far to the left, but in terms of economic justice and anti-war, it's spot on.

Apparently he too has pretty much given up on our bought and paid for politicians.

It was also interesting, in light of the news today about the immigrant workers' arrest at Wal-Mart, that there seems to be a crack down going on similar to the one at Tyson in order to create a fair wage situation by eliminating unfair competition with illegal workers. I guess it's not convenient for some industries to ship work overseas for cheaper labor, so the migrant situation was the next best group to exploit.

...that Republican economic policy is an "insult to God."

A theologian calling on all everyone using the Abrahamic OS to say the disparity that exists in American wages is immoral and unacceptable.

I admit to being very disturbed...ten years ago I bought a little farm 6 miles east of Jefferson Wisconsin...I know beauty is in the eye of the beholder but Jefferson was an idyllic, mostly unknown, little Wisconsin town.

Now I can watch it on television in its role as one of many brush fires in a growing rebellion against the Arkansization of America. Tyson in town with Wal-Mart knocking on the door.

Bring on global warming so Russia won't be so cold?! Sounds like Bush logic.

Good old Union Seminary, at the forefront of social justice for more than a century! One of the places that actually had anti-WW II protesting going on. Certainly very, very big on economic justice as well.

Ah, how I loved it, and continue to love it. A good seminary, and not afiliated with any church, so it's free to be as liberal and prophetic as it can be. of course, it's in terrible financial difficulties right now, which is one of the penalties for being actually concerned for the poor and disenfranchised. people like to give to seminaries that *don't* challenge the status quo.

Every segment was excellent.

Although they're ALL good.

WTVS Detroit has chosen 1pm ET on Sunday as the time to run Moyers' show.

WTVS is also the satellite feed for the Canadian cable systems.

Must be that liberal media putting this show on the air at this time.

Watch the numbers as Moyers blows away the NFL and NASCAR in the ratings. Just don't hold your breath.
