An NBC news van could not escape the fire and burned up,, the crew was rescued by the firemen.whew!!

5. American Red cross has set up a disaster fund
http://www.fire.ca.gov/cdf/incidents/index.html

have to specify Southern California fire to keep it local.. I was not fast enough to write down the address.. maybe someone else was, and could post it.. It's not on the website yet.

8. I was watching...
a live feed from LA's Ch. 9 on Charter. Just as they said that all the mountain towns were to be evacuated - the channel switched to a paid program advertising *Butt Tightners*. Just got off the phone from a highly unsatisfactory discussion with a Charter rep. I am so pissed off. I pay close to 90 bucks a month for this lousey service. It's worth your life to get a hold of a real person - and when you do, it proves pointless.

The rep repeatedly assured me that Charter has no control over what comes over any channel. How come Charter has control over what I pay?
Maybe it's time I looked into a dish.

Meanwhile, down in southern Callifornia we have the greatest devastation ever to hit this State. My heart goes out to everyone there - as well as all the little creatures - God help them all.

20. actually, the next logical disaster will be mudslides at the first good
rainfall. Once the shrub burns, the mud just ROLLS right down the naked hill....then in rainfall we will all watch while the millionaires shudder.

15. Isn't Bakersfield where that Repuke Bill Thomas is from?
And is there any way that the fire could burn down his office (with nobody in it, of course) and leave everything else untouched?

16. dear god....
nothing scares me more than fire.

years ago, in a different apt., the building next to mine was burning.

i ran around madly filling a couple of duffles. manuscripts, pictures, other treasures... and then leaving the REST OF MY LIFE behind.

nothing bad happened. the fire in the adjacent bldg was extinguished and all was fine

but, the terror of that threat...

i hope that all (DUers and others) stay safe through this...

25. Don't remind me
We're just reeling from one crisis to another like a drunken sailor. First we have the busrt of the .com bubble, then the gas prices getting hiked, then Enron, then the deficit, THEN the recall, THEN Ahnuld WINNING the recall, and now THIS! Did someone just piss off some divinity and make it take its anger out on us poor Californians? Is some god just giving us the birdy? It seriously seems like that too.

21. my first post
My first post at DU after lurking for three months or so. I hope that things improve soon out there in California. SoCalDem, I have been reading your posts for three months and feel like I know you, I feel that way about a lot of you actually. Be sure and know that many of us are thinking of everyone in California. I lived in Mira Mesa for six years and know all of these places very well. Ok, there. I have officially jumped in the water at DU.

28. The Smoke Will Cause A Lot Of Problems...
I've been watching the NOAA sat photos and those smoke plumes look almost toxic. I've talked up and down the state today and our hopes and prayers are with all...especially those in direct peril.

The thing I kept hearing from my business associate in Burbank (he was looking right into Simi Valley) and my brother in North County was how bad the smoke was becoming and leaving a grit on everything. The smell of smoke is in the air and besides the immediate health hazzard to those with lung ailments, there'll be a lingering effect.

I went through a house fire 25 years ago...fortunately our house was saved, but the smoke damage was extensive and it took years for us to get the grit and that awful smell out of our lives. Just recently I had to go through my parents artifacts and found papers with that brown tinge...living through and with fire is one you never forget.
