Newsweek Photo - Bush Boozing, Laura Looking?
I couldn't help but get the impression that Laura's face was wrought with concern and worry as she stared, wide-eyed, at Dubya as he drank a glass of what looked like champagne while in Bangkok.

If you can get the hardcopy magazine, the image is bigger and her expression is much, much easier to see -- as is the half-full glass in shrubs hand.

Take a look at the photo and tell me if you agree. To me, Laura has a look on her face like -- uh oh, he's drinking alcohol..again... I hope he stops before people notice or he does/says something dumber than usual..

15. Naah. Tiberius
George P. Bush will be our Caligula.

They should get the Imperial Senatorial Stall Ready for his favorite horse, because he will be our Emperor probably by 2030.

5. I thought
He was off the booze completely...

Didn't he say he was an alcoholic?

8. He usually refuses to call himself an alcoholic
That was a big issue when he ran against Richards for governor. He claimed that he had become a heavy drinker and that alcohol had begun to compete with his affections for his wife, so after a bad bout of drinking on his fortieth birthday, he stopped drinking. He criticized Richards for having to go to AA to stop drinking.

I've heard a lot of people say that Bush claims he hasn't had a drink since he was forty. I don't know for sure that he ever said that. All I've heard or seen quoted says he quit drinking. He's been drunk at least a couple of times since then-- he was thrown out of a restuarant in NY for screaming at a reporter who had criticized his father's presidency, and he was drunk at a wedding, and caught on film at that one. I know several people in Austin who claim to have seen him drunk, too, but since he drinks near beers a lot (or used to), some of those reports may be wrong. But I'm not sure he's actually claimed he's never drunk or been drunk after forty, only that he quit drinking. Given the way he uses the truth, there's no telling what that means to him.

16. I thought he
said he had done nothing illegal(drugs) since he turned 40 - either way he is now...what?... 56? He was clinging 2 'youthful indiscretions' way after his youth was spent.

25. "Neer Beers" have alcohol in them. They are a "no no" for alcoholics.
The "no alcohol" thing is a myth and a horrible lie - especially to those struggling with the addiction.

9. Yes, but he's never said he's an alcoholic
and never been through any recovery program .

Part of the first steps to recovery is saying
"I'm a recovering alcoholic/addict"

and without taking those first steps , it's
more likely to relapse .

13. He never said he was an alcoholic.
He said he stopped drinking when he was 40, but the ironic part is that he drink non-alcoholic beer (O'Douls) and this is a real no-no among anyone recovering from alcohol dependence.

14. So he said he stopped drinking when he was 40?
How recently was that picture taken - just a few days or a week ago? What was he doing with that glass raised up to his lips - not inhaling?

21. Maybe it's non-alcoholic wine. But, from the way he has been
acting lately, e.g., that press conference...maybe he is drinking again.

7. Could be reason for sudden extended vacation.
Anyway to know what recovery specialists are flying into crawford?(flight records) How long would a drying out take? Would there be signs of drying out if he is not seen for three weeks and then appears emaciated and cranky ?

10. I don't believe he's ever been off
Look at his pictures on 9-11, watch that speech he gave from Louisiana. His eyes are red, his speech is slurred. CNN had a copy on their web site for a while, but it seemed to have unreddened his eyes a bit. Live on TV it was pronounced. There are a lot of stories about him still drinking, including the pretzel story, when the doctor's first comments were that it was not alcohol related-- before anyone had asked him. I've heard journalists implying that there are a lot of stories but that they haven't been able to get concrete proof. A friend of mine visited him at the Governor's Mansion here in Texas, and claims he was drunk. That almost became a story, but again, there was no proof except the word of a half dozen high school seniors.

11. I'm sorry, but this is just silly.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bush is drinking still, but this photo proves absolutely nothing. IMO Laura always looks like a deer-in-the-headlights and there's no way at all to tell what's in his glass. Anyway, surruptitious drunks are usually just that; this is way too obvious a situation for a closet drinker. I really think we've got enough genuine ammunition regarding the Bumbler-in-Chief without making stuff up...

12. I think he is medicated..
I think perhaps he had a pretty serious relapse, possibly the pretzel incident, and his handlers put him on the meds to control the alcoholic tendencies.

In a lot of appearances, he's had all the signs of being really, really medicated. Sometimes he can barely keep it together.

23. I agree, he looks medicated
His eyes look glazed and medicated. He loses his thought in the middle of a sentence. He's gained weight. Columnists who wrote about one of his pre-war press conferences openly speculated that he was slurring his speech on heavy medication.

17. Its just an old trick they use in movies. Its not really champagne.
For him, they substitute Long Island Iced Tea and it looks the same.

24. Bush 41
and his pal James Baker loved the blue bombs. (Halcion)
Maybe Junior has been riffling Daddy's medicine cabinet.
Mix a few Halcions with a six-pack of ODouls and presto!
Totally fried, but not drinking.
