Argument with rightwing father / Need Powell links
Edited on Tue Jul-22-03 05:11 PM by TheBlob
I'm reposting this because it was lost in the GD wipe out and all the links that were posted by blm, lfairban, loonman, catwoman, and narraback were lost before I had a chance to save them.

*******************************************

I just got into a huge fight over the phone with my rightwing father (who I rarely talk to) over Bush's meltdown in the media.
This guy is hardcore, FOX News watching, bigoted, "towelhead"-hating conservative. He's a walking cliche. I've been sending him numerous emails of articles I've found here at DU (Thanks guys!) over the last few months (PNAC, Leo Strauss, 9/11 negligence, forgeries, lies about the war, etc,)and he hadn't responded to any of them.

Today I just went off about Bush and once he started to defend him the floodgates opened up. I had him on the ropes in no time and he backed down like never before. His only defense was "They are all corrupt, ALL of them. The Liberals, the Democrats, and the Republicans. None of them care about the people." --That's the best defense he could come up with. -(That and Clinton. WTF?)

He finally ended with saying "I don't care about politics anymore. I'm not going to talk about it ever again. I just don't care. I don't care what happens to Iraq, we should just nuke them all and be done with it (He's a big Catholic too). I don't care about what's going on. I'm done with politics, etc. etc"

Of course I brought up the "It's your patriotic duty to be as informed as you can" stuff, but clearly he was out of options.

He thinks the Dems are gonna purposely blow 2004 by holding up a weak candidate (any of the current candidates) so they can float Hillary in 2008, he think's Cheney will step down due to health reasons, he thinks either Rice or Powell will step in as VP. He also refuses to read any more international articles on Bush so I shouldn't bother sending them. He does however still love Powell and thinks he should be the next President.

I'm in the process of sending him information on Wesley Clark. Who I think (once he jumps in the race after Labor Day) has the strongest chance of being the next President.

What I'm looking for now is some Powell links, the "I'm not reading this, this is bullshit" story would be a nice start.
And if anyone has any Rice and Powell lies at the ready those would be great too.

4. Thanks guys
I've already got the 20 lies stuff.
What I'm really looking for is the "I'm not reading this, this is bullshit" story, and any Rice/Powell lies documented by major news sources.
Anyone?

6. "I don't care about politics anymore"
I know he's your father, but that's the sort of whine I would expect from a four-year-old: I'm losing, I don't like this game anymore.

Well, it's not really a game, and the real "losers" in the way it's been played lately have been our society's most vulnerable citizens, international relations, the military (which was duped into this quagmire), and of course, those uncounted thousands of dead Iraqis.

Your dad's current attitude is highly disappointing, but if he's at least acknowledging that "they're all corrupt" and that everyone lies, there's a chance he's moving into reachable territory. Don't be too harsh on him, TheBlob, and give him some space and grace to form new opinions and draw new conclusions. Keep feeding him facts about the incredible corruption of the Bush administration. I suspect he really does care still care. Good luck.

7. I agree with ya G
It is childish.
Like putting your hands over your eyes and refusing to see things clearly. All that was missing was the foot stomping. I think deep down he knows the ship is sinking and he wants to leave some leeway for him to jump ship without losing too much face.

I try not to go overboard with the guy cause I know a defensive person is impossible to reason with, but I just had to let it all out this time. I'll try to take it easier on him, but I will keep hammering him with the truth right up until election day.

I may be the only liberal in my entire extended family but I refuse to let them hide in blissful ignorance. If they are gonna vote for these bastards then I'm going to tell them just what they're voting for.

I take this seriously, like all of us here at DU. Our country is at stake. Our citizens are more at risk from terrorism than ever before. Our soldiers are killing and being killed by order of corrupt leaders. The international community hates us. The stability of the world depends on who we elect next year.

I'll never let them forget it.
