PETITION FOR VOTER-VERIFIED PAPER BALLOTS

As you know, we are in a battle in Washington State, and elsewhere, to mandate voting systems that can be audited. Touch Screen machines have no audit capability unless they produce a voter-verified paper ballot. There is no way to check if the system is accurate without it. Everything else the election officials talk about is just multiple storage of the COMPUTER'S VERSION of your vote, right or wrong. Oh yes, these systems can be rigged, and the certification talked about has been severely rebuked by the California Voting Task Force as deficient, especially in security.(Above added by RE)

Back in 1980, I voted third party in the Presidential race. We had new "video voters". But something funny happened. My precinct recorded NO votes for the third party candidate! I IMMEDIATELY went to the County Clerk and demanded to know what happened. It seemed that the video voter machines "swallowed" the ballots of everyone who voted in the first half hour the polls were opened (I was first to vote in my precinct). I asked what would be done-and the CC said the video voting machines were scrapped, which they were. This was a technical glitch, but it shows how unreliable and how easily manipulated these machines are.

BTW, I signed the petition!

Electronic voting machines are being bought all over the country right now with Federal funds (Help America Vote Act, HAVA. They and the vote-collecting software provide several ways to alter results. The voter-verified ballot is the only workable solution proposed (legislation introduced by Representative Rush Holt of NJ).
