Democrat wins in Philly
It's Street in a walk.

John Street easily won re-election as mayor of Philadelphia, trouncing his Republican rival Sam Katz.

10. Very happy!
Street has done a decent job as mayor, helping the poor neighborhoods that really need the help. And it will send a message to the pResident and Ashcroft. Also, the Philly Inquirer was slapped in the face after they endorsed Katz and said the conspiracy theory was a fantasy.

12. Delightful!
All the shennanigans with the wire tapping added up to nothing. A big, fat zero. I'm out here in Colorado and couldn't be happier for the Dems in Philly!

14. The b*sh backlash is here.
Katz had a fighting chance until the wiretapping incident turned this from a contest dividing along racial lines, into a referendum against the Republican Party and W*. I believe this is a pretty good indicator of what b*sh will face in PA come 2004. If we can stop our petty, self-defeating sniping, and rally around a candidate, the turnout here could be historic. Even the Republicans I know in Philly hate b*sh. :bounce:

15. Also Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) executive
the Democratic challenger easily defeated the incumbent GOP executive. So Good news on both sides of Pennsylvania and with Rendell's victory in '02 a good sign for Dems going into 2004 in a key swing state.

18. Local commentator this morning said....
the street campaign was able to "republicanize" Katz in the past two months and the Katz campaign was unable to deflect the party association. Philadelphians just did not want a republican in office no matter how much of a centrist Katz was. More than the bug and possible investigation, this issue galvanized voters. Wish it was so on the national front. Phila. is an island surrounded by entrenched suburban republican governments and heavy republican voters. Why is that? The dem pres. candidate will always take Philly but barely makes a showing in the burbs in SE PA.
