Time to ratchet up a notch for 2004, folks.

It is time for major changes in this party or we will continue to get these same results year after year.

It is time for realistic assessments, not pie in the sky platitudes.

It's over. We lost Mississippi.

Before people go out and slit their wrists consider this.

MS and KY both went for Bush in 2000, and will again certainly in 2004. So it makes no difference in that regard.

The GOP will be spinning no doubt. But we kicked ass in important swing and conservative states/cities today:

Ohio
New Jersey
Louisiana
Virginia
Salt Lake City
Philidelphia

and others.

So today was a good day. Unless, of course, you live in Mississippi or Kentucky.

So no worries.

Sorry, but minor ballot initiatives, non-partisan races and races in heavily Democratic areas mean exactly nothing.

The ship is taking on water and major changes are needed, not comments on how pretty the scenery is as we sink.

#1 McAuliffe must go!

Are you terribly surprised that the Republicans won in KY and MS?

Everything else was good.

I would be shocked if we carried those two states next year.

Accept it for what it is.

Not necessarily. I'm not ready to concede Louisiana just yet. Blanco and Jindal are in a statistical dead heat in the polls, even after Nagin's betrayal. Still 11 days to go before the election. It's anybody's race.

"NO MORE negative, pessimistic posts!!!"

Sometimes things just suck. There is no reason to sugarcoat bad news.

It looks to me like Mississippi is lost. I would rather see real assessments of the vote totals, not dreamy predictions of comeback finishes if the odds are virtually insurmountable.

Jiacinto is one of the best vote counters on DU. If he believes things don't look good, I want to hear it. If we see better news in Louisiana 10 days or so from now I am certain Jiacinto will be amongst the first to let us know.

28. I suspect..
the tracking and exit polling indicates the race will close up as the final vote totals come in. If the networks are saying it is too close to call it tells me that all the tracking and exit poll data they have access too says the margin will be quite close - perhaps much closer than it appears now.

My best guess, we close the gap but probably not enough to win.

I'm going to sleep now and will hope for the best. I can't stand Haley Barbour so I will just have to hope for a miracle, but I won't be holding my breath as it really doesn't look good to me at this time.

But reality is not a strong suit of the local purists, who insist that any candidate who is not an agnostic pacifist vegan marijuana activist from Berkeley is not an authentic Democrat.

Yep, Musgrove is quite conservative. But he's a hell of a lot better than the alternative. Those of us who remember Kirk Fordice don't need to be reminded of that.

That mindset really gets me sometimes. Like the people here who excoriate, say, John Breaux because they find him too conservative. Well, who in the hell do they think gets elected in Louisiana? And at least Breaux is on the people's side some of the time.

But no, some insist. If we can't have Noam Chomsky, then we might as well have Hitler.

37. OK GUYS, IT'S OVER.
It appears that Haley Barbour is our new governor. Scoff if you like, but Bush takes this as an indicator that he will win in 2004.

I don't feel like going into all of this, but just let me say that I have some serious decisions to make now. I can't work with Haley Barbour...no way.

I can't figure out where Ronnie did anything wrong, but when you are facing a national political machine hellbent on winning, what can you do?

I will confess that I am not that distraught about Barbara Blackmon being defeated, as much as I despise Amy Tuck. Blackmon tried to proove herself more pro-life than Tuck, so she challenged Tuck (who was rumored to have had an abortion before her divorce) to sign an affidavit stating that she had never had an abortion. Tuck wouldn't do it, and Blackmon looked like a fool afterwards.

Musgrove was a good governor--I don't want to hear criticism of him right now. You have to govern from the middle of your state...you can't be a flaming liberal if most of the people in your state are conservatives. I am a liberal, but I appreciated Musgrove--worked my ass off for him as did many of my friends.

Anyway, now I have to decide if I can work for women, on behalf of women, to advance women, under Haley Barbour. Do I drive myself crazy banging my head against the wall or do I walk away?

Guess I will decide that in the next week or so.

At any rate, thank you all for hanging with us Mississippians through this, and please bear with us as we deal with frustration wrought by Barbour's admin in the future.

Thanks again.

jchild

40. Bush was likely to carry Mississippi anyway
If I were him, I wouldn't get too excited about this victory.

There are some southern states a Dem nominee could win, but MS is likely not one of them. We need to focus on states like Arkansas, Louisiana, and Tennessee in '04.

45. I am very sorry
I lived in MS from 95 to 97 and know just how bad Republican governance can be down there. Fordice was gov the entire time and there was a Republican lite gov for some of the time. Musgrove was an impressive man. From what I have heard MS is a basket case right now and he got the blame. That is unfair but that is how life is at times. Both you and he deserved better. I wish you luck which ever decision you make. From personal experience I know what life if like there and got out. But, others stay. Good luck.

I gained a new respect for the state of Mississippi tonight. Clearly a lot of people turned out to fight the bad guys but it just wasn't our/your night.

I feel sorry for the people who will have to be governed by an overt racist fuckwit. I remember this Repuke B-teamer from way back in the 92 Prez campaign and he truly is an embarassment to democracy.
