Despite Kentucky and Mississippi, Democrats had a good night
Sure the press will focus on the high profile Governor's races, but overall the Democratic party did quite well in state and municipal elections across the country last night.

In key states which will be important in 2004 Democrats cleaned up. The most striking case in point is Pennsylvania.

Philadelphia Mayor--Street re-elected in an unusually large landslide when just days ago it had been considered neck and neck.

Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) Executive--Democrats ousted a GOP incumbent in a landslide.

The Dems also elected a new State Supreme Court Justice.

All of this, coming on the heels of Ed Rendell's victory for Governor last year. Pennsylvania, always a battleground state in presidential elections and with a crucial senate contest next year is looking better for Democrats.

Another case in point is New Jersey--Democrats broke a tie in the State Senate and now lead in both Houses of the Legislature. This despite the presumed unpopularity of Gov. McGreevey. Now that we have this advantage we must take the initiative and lead.

Virginia--Democrats picked up seats in the State Assembly.

Democrats won major Mayorial races in Akron, Houston, Salt Lake City, and elsewhere.

Now on to Louisiana!! like we did after 2002 election, Louisiana will give us a major victory.

1. It all starts at the lower levels and works up...
...GOP governors find it difficult to push GOP agendas when everything else is run by Democrats.

14. My GOP governor,
Bob Taft, wasn't even able to push his GOP agenda here, where the Republicans are running everything. What a vote of no-confidence -- the Ohio GOP spent a lot of money trying to sell that whoop-de-do 'Third Frontier' package, but ultimately it squeaked by here in the tech-heavy SW part of the state and got whooped everywhere else, if the early returns reflected the ultimate outcome (haven't seen 'em yet, but they'd called it before I went to bed last night without all the numbers). That's because people in other parts of the state knew it would wind up being pork directed at the districts of people like their Ohio GOP darlings Steve Chabot and Mike Turner, not something that benefited the entire state. No matter how much money they spent, I guess people don't want Taft's white elephants anymore, anyway.

Of course, they'll win the next time there's a gubernatorial election, because people are still stupid, dogmatic and easily led -- they're just not that stupid when it comes to their money, apparently.

2. Thanks for pointing this out
Despite the dems losing in the two races for governor, it seems they did very well in most other places.

Of course, the media will ignore this fact as much as possible and try to spin last night as a major repug victory which it wasn't.

4. Intellectually I'm fine with the results
Emotionally, I am distressed and depressed at the Governor's races.

What will it take for a democrat to win a big election in a southern state?

3. Houston
The Democrat, White, only took first place w/ 38%. The Republican, Sanchez, got 31% There will be a run off, but the other Democrat running, Turner, has been burned by the downtown establishment before. His support for White in the run off is not a given.

5. Don't worry about KY and MS: "Dems" never ruled the sourth,"Dixicrats"
were the ones in control. Almost all with exception of Zell Miller and a few others came out of the closet years ago and switched to the republicans. Someone said that "the south was never stauchly Democratic, just staunchly racist." that's true.

State Legislatures....

We lost Mississippi, Kentucky, and California in the past month....

A few more "victories" like this and the Democratic party will be extinct....

9. I agree fully

It wasn't realistic to expect wins in KY and MS. And the other news is almost invariably good, perhaps even great, and maybe more important in the overall picture.

13. Why Was It Unrealistic To Expect To Win In KY and MS....
They were Democratic seats.....

And I am familiar with the incumnbent KY governor's misdeeds....

Instead of redefining victory let's try to win for a change....

The R's control the House

The R's control the Senate

The R's control the White House.....

The R's hold the governorships of the four largest states in the Union and twenty four or twenty five others.

For the first time in a generation the parties are at parity in identification....

Wow, a Democratic alderman won in Schenecdaty.....

If the Dems were a baseball theam they'd be the Mets....

If the Dems were a football team they'd be the Bengals.....

If the Dems were a basketball team they'd be the Los Angeles Clippers.....

Just win baby.....

15. Don't for get Suffolk County, New York! Steve Levy, D
won Suffolk County Executive seat and this has been lifelong Republican turf.

Ending a dozen years of Republican rule, Suffolk voters elected Democrat Steve Levy as county executive yesterday, after a campaign in which he had hit hard on government corruption under the GOP.

Speaking to cheering supporters in Holtsville late last night, Levy said, "We are going to give the people of Suffolk County a more efficient government.

"We slew a Goliath called the inefficient political machine," Levy said, "and we slew a dinosaur called the old-boy network."

Romaine conceded the race to Levy at about 10:45 last night, thanking the people of Suffolk County for their support, but criticizing his opponent for having waged a negative campaign.

17. I would also add about Virginia
We have a very popular Democratic Governor (Mark Warner). In addition, in Fairfax County, Democrats swept all offices handily, turning aside challenges from Republicans who had pledged a cap on property taxes. Fairly impressive

19. yeah
but overall we did pretty well in states which will count next year. Pennsylvania for instance--Philly Mayor, Allegehny Co. Executive, Supreme Court justice--and New Jersey where Dems took over the legislature.

No one ever felt Dems will win Kentucky and Mississippi next year and as for California--Arnold ran more like a Democrat. I'm not worried there either. Louisiana next week we will pick up a GOP governorship.
