Canada's new cash crop: marijuana
from the good folks at Forbes, no less . . .

http://www.forbes.com/forbes/2003/1110/146.html

Inside Dope
by Quentin Hardy

"In the quiet countryside just outside Vancouver, B.C. an ambitious young entrepreneur surveys a blindingly bright room filled with lovely plants--dozens of stalks of high-power marijuana. Almost ready for harvest, they hold threadlike, resin-frosted pot flowers, rust-and-white "buds" thickening in a base of green-and-purple leaves. The room reeks of citrus and menthol, a drug-rich musk lingering on fingertips and clothes.

"There's no way I won't make a million dollars," says the entrepreneur, David (one-name sources throughout this story are pseudonymous). He runs several other sites like this one, reaping upwards of $80,000 in a ten-week cycle. Says he: "Even if they bust me for one, I'm covered."

- much more . . .

1. Marijuana - #1 US cash crop
I read that over the summer. I hope they don't start trashing Canada over this, we've made enough enemies in the last 3 years.

What a civilized country. I'm glad they're our neighbor.

edit: I like how the Forbes article includes basic growing instructions.

We need more 'Davids' and more Vancouvers in the world IMO.

5. ahhahaha
our drug policy of prohibition is making Canadians so rich, and putting all of our minorities in prison, and giving all of America's "Nascar dads" police and DEA jobs. This is surreal. This article was amazing - great post. You'd think our duly appointed leaders would know that there is a great way to cash in on decriminalization. There must be more money to be made on the back-end, purchasing more weapons and more troops, more prisons, for the war on drugs, than there is in decriminalization.

6. Fines, seizures, tax penalties
Not to mention the price of the drugs themselves. Just like during prohibition, someone is making a killing selling this to Americans. My guess is the same guys providing it to be sold are reaping a windfall in fines, property seizures, home forclosings and tax penalties.
