Why Southern Baptist will play hard ball this year
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 01:27 PM by La_Serpiente
OK, I was just over at GAy news, and they had this story of how the Southern Baptists will demand that all candidates sign a petition saying that they will support a Constitutional Amendment outlaying gay marriage.

I was just like, "oh well, ok yeah yeah".

But as I read further on, they were getting really serious about it and were going into culture wars and everything.

"We want to make sure there is no confusion about what the Bible says on this issue," said Richard Land, who heads the convention's ethics and religious liberties commission.

The SBC is also pressing to make gay marriage a key issue in next year's election.

"We hope to make every candidate in this 2004 election cycle -- be he or she a candidate for president, Senate, Congress, governor or state legislature -- answer the question, 'Are you for or against the federal marriage amendment?' And then we will make sure everyone we influence knows how the candidate answered it," Land said.

<snip>

<snip>

But, Land claims the gay community is already too involved in politics, charging that gays have forced the Church into a "cultural war and a spiritual war."

"The homosexual activists are out to normalize and affirm their lifestyle and to marginalize those of us who believe it's unnatural and unholy," he said. "When we get attacked, we fight back. They want a war for the high ground of this culture, they got it, and we intend to win it."

OK, making people vote to hate another group??? Uggh...it's sickning.

10. The bible says a lot of things and I suggest so-called Christians read it
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 02:15 PM by Bandit
There is so much that is reprehensible in the Bible that is never made public. For every issue they bring up using the Bible as justification there is another passage to be found to contradict it. "Love your neighbor." Unless of course you disagree with their politics. "Forgive those who trespass." "Judge Not" etc. etc.

5. I'll believe them
when they start stoning smart-mouthed kids. Or when they stone their neighbor for mowing the lawn on the sabbath. I still think that the reason they are so poisonous is because they get turned on by good looking guys and it pisses them off.

6. Go for it. This is a guaranteed loser for them.
A vast majority of Americans (something like 65%) agree with certain rights and protections for gays.

These nutcases are taking too hard a line to be taken seriously by the average voter in Peoria.

7. Well, that should win lots of folks to Christ
don't you think?

It's sad. A whole denomination of so-called Christians basing a movement on hate and bigotry.

Of course, what's even sadder is that my two Senators will be knocking each other out of the way in the rush to sign up.:eyes:

8. The Southern Bapts officially went from worshipping God/Jesus to
worshipping the bible at a SB convention sometime in the '90's, I believe. The bible is their main focus now, with the belief that the bible is free from errors. Personal interpretation of the bible WAS a Baptist hallmark, as was separation between church and state. What I worry about now is other mainstream denominations being infiltrated/taken over by fundamentalists. If it could happen to southern bapts, it could happen to anybody.

13. the story of how the Southern Baptist convention was couped by right wing
persons is interesting. -and guess who was among them at first--Chuck Colson.

A good overview of a few books that address the Southern Baptist split.

9. We all remember how well the GOP's 1992 kulturkampf worked.
Even many Republicans were forced to admit that the gaybash convention was a disaster for them.

11. This is good news for us
A lot of hand wringing takes place on DU about the increasing influence of the radical right on the Republican party, but we really should be encouraging it. Let the religious groups hijack the Republican party, it's a good trend for Democrats.

Marginalize the party. Though the bulk of the people in this country may claim to be religious (a dubious claim anyway) they don't care what the Bible says about issues. They have a sense of right and wrong, and the bulk of this country thinks Jerry Falwell is a lunatic.

They've got the guns, but we've got the numbers.

14. That's exactly right!
The more we can associate these Pharisees with Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, Oral Roberts, and televangelists, the better off we are!

12. Sad thing is that the fundies will probably get their stupid amendment
Cowardly Democrats in Congress will probably roll over and support it, just like they did with the DOMA a few years back.

Sigh.
