PATRIOT ACT: Law's use causing concerns

Use of statute in corruption case unprecedented, attorneys contend
By J.M. KALIL and
STEVE TETREAULT
REVIEW-JOURNAL

The investigation of strip club owner Michael Galardi and numerous politicians appears to be the first time federal authorities have used the Patriot Act in a public corruption probe.

Government officials said Tuesday they knew of no other instances in which federal agents investigating allegations such as racketeering and bribery of politicians have employed the act.

"I don't know that it's been used in a public corruption case before this," said Mark Corallo, a spokesman for the Justice Department.

An attorney for one of the defendants in the Galardi case said he researched the matter for hours Tuesday and came to the same conclusion.

"I have discussed this with lawyers all over the country, and if the government has done this before, then this is definitely the first time it has come to light," said Las Vegas attorney Dominic Gentile, who represents former Clark County Commissioner Lance Malone, Galardi's lobbyist.

20. The hooker case didn't specifically involve the "Patriot" Act
Edited on Wed Nov-05-03 10:04 PM by Sick of Bullshit
per se, but it did involve the squandering of massive government resources on something as benign as a New Orleans brothel. The strip club article makes the point that the Las Vegas arrests are apparently the first use of the PA against Americans for reasons that are totaly unconnected to "terrorism".

Of course, Asscrunch is "terror-fied" of naked women, so maybe that explains it.

26. Wasn't that the brave investigation
...that led to the arrest of 12 hookers in six months?

Most anyone could round up twenty hookers in one night just by going to a truck stop, but not the Crisco Kid.

Never! Ever! Send someone who knows nothing about hiring prostitutes to try to bust prostitutes.

5. Correct me If I am wrong but...
Didn't a certain somebody go on television and speak directly to the American people and said this law is for terrorist only, and American citizens need not worry about their right? Or was I just dreaming this?

Could this be just another lie?

From his actions an attitude, it is obvious that Ashcroft can only get it up for young boys at prayer meetings.

13. The law is supposed to sunset in 2005
Meaning it may come up for a re-vote in the election year. Maybe this time some politicians will actually read the law.

15. Germany's Enabling Acts of 1933
were also supposed to have a four-year sunset clause-- but it took a defeat in a major war to get rid of them.

24. Not the first time. It was used against online gamling too.
The Patriot Act was also recently used against eBay in a caser involving online gambling.

Those foolish members of Congress who went along with the Patriot Act don't realize that they were bamboozled into giving up out freedoms for reasons totally unrelated to the war on terror.

The Patriot Act was a laundry list, packaged in a box with 9-11, but it is so much more sweeping.

PayPal charged with breaking Patriot Act

A U.S. Attorney's office has alleged that PayPal violated laws regarding the processing of online gambling payments, and is asking parent company eBay to hand over nine months of the gambling-related earnings in settlement.
The U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Missouri told eBay that its online payment service violated provisions in the USA Patriot Act between October 2001 and July 2002, according to eBay's annual report, filed Monday with securities regulators. Under the act, it is prohibited to transmit funds known to have come from a criminal offense, or that are intended to promote or support unlawful activities.

The agency is seeking to collect any earnings that PayPal received from online gambling merchants during the nine-month period, as well as interest. Last year, PayPal received 6 percent of its revenue from online gambling, according to its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

25. This is more proof that the USA Patriot Act...
...was never intended to be used to fight 'terrorism'. It's a instrument of oppression used by the State for any purpose they choose.
