It's time for the Congress to admit they were duped on Iraq
It is now patently obvious that none of the reasons offered by this administration for going to war were valid. To go further there is now a growing body of evidence that the administration knowlingly put forth bogus information to dupe the Congress into abdicating their constitutional authority to declare war and to give open ended approval for an unprecedented preemptive military engagement.

To sum it up they were had. They can pretend it didn't happen or they can face up to it and attempt to undo the wrong by immediately authorizing a cessation of military action in Iraq and a return of our troops. A failure to act is tantamount to watching a murder being committed and not reporting it to the police. By inaction you become a defacto accomplice to the crime.

I am certain beyond any doubt if the evidence in hand were presented to a jury, they would find this administration guilty of premeditated murder. Under our constitution the only legal body with the power to rectify it is The Congress.

Why not ask your Congressman or Congresswoman how they can ethically and legally standby and watch while this atrocity continues to unfold?

1. If for no other reason they should do it for the leaked memo
the one the repukes are calling "treasonous". All that was basically said was 'we need to expose the lies'. Now it is time to stand up in the well of the Senate and call a lie a lie. The American people already know they were lied to. It's time for congress to stand up and say it, too. As far as pulling all the troops out immediately, I don't know. But congress should force Shrub to give up control of Iraq to the UN so UN forces can get on the ground and get the burden off our troops there.

4. You're not going to like the results
Because what will come out in the wash is that both repub and democrat in congress was guilty of abdicating their constitutional responsibility. One poster here was correct - they basically chickened out in the face of hyperpatriotic fervor that was assumed might snatch them from their chair if they voted against Bush on his war.

I am all in favor of clean sweeping these cowards and criminals from Congress - and that includes the Bush collaborators like Gephardt, Lieberman and Kerry as well.

6. Very well said.
They can't complain about the Bush because they looked at the same intelligence information that Bush got. Gephardt admitted this weekend that he went to the CIA himself three different times to talk to Tennant himself. They are as much to blame as Bush is. Clark is no better because he was for the war, then against the war, then for the war, then against the war.

Bottom line, Dean was against the war from the beginning and has my vote locked up.

7. High time for accountability
If your rep voted against the war he or she gets a big high five and kudos. If your rep didn't they can continue to support this fiasco or admit their mistake and vote to make amends.

I would love to see a national effort commenced to force accountability on this issue. We need to out the scoundrels and send them to the showers come next election.

5. I wasn't duped - I knew all along that nothing they were saying held water
And I don't have any assistants working for me. My secret? I'm able to read. Killer weapon to have huh? I've got something else too. A memory. I was able to remember all the way back to the last time we invaded Iraq based on a shitload of proven lies. I've also got another advantage. I don't consider everyone to be dumber than a shoe. It's obvious that much of congress considers us all to be the dumbest people on earth if they really think we would buy the line that they were duped.

9. Senator Byrd: Its Most Unfortunate Act
from Senator Byrd's speech "The Truth Will Emerge" (5/21/03):

<snip>

In fact, there is little to constrain this President. Congress, in what will go down in history as its most unfortunate act, handed away its power to declare war for the foreseeable future and empowered this President to wage war at will.

As if that were not bad enough, members of Congress are reluctant to
ask questions which are begging to be asked. How long will we occupy
Iraq? We have already heard disputes on the numbers of troops which
will be needed to retain order. What is the truth? How costly will the
occupation and rebuilding be? No one has given a straight answer. How
will we afford this long-term massive commitment, fight terrorism at
home, address a serious crisis in domestic healthcare, afford behemoth
military spending and give away billions in tax cuts amidst a deficit
which has climbed to over $340 billion for this year alone? If the
President's tax cut passes it will be $400 billion. We cower in the
shadows while false statements proliferate. We accept soft answers and
shaky explanations because to demand the truth is hard, or unpopular, or may be politically costly.

<snip>

And mark my words, the calculated intimidation which we see so often
of late by the "powers that be" will only keep the loyal opposition
quiet for just so long. Because eventually, like it always does, the
truth will emerge. And when it does, this house of cards, built of
deceit, will fall.
