Gary Hart suggests Dean peaked too soon while campaigning for Kerry in NH
Kerry gets a little Hart in New Hampshire

By SAM YOUNGMAN
PoliticsNH.com

CONCORD, Nov. 5 -- Former New Hampshire primary winner Gary Hart was in the Granite State Wednesday stumping in his old stomping grounds for an old friend.

<snip>

He also sounded off on former Gov. Howard Dean, whom he said is blunt and direct almost to a fault.

“Candidates do peak, and sometimes they peak too soon,” Hart said.

He suggested to the media that they run a poll focusing not on who they’re voting for, but instead who their second choice might be, adding that he didn’t think Dean would be on many people’s list.

1. This race is far, FAR from over
Now if Dean doesn't completely blow Kerry out, Kerry will declare victory a la Clinton in '92!

4. Kerry would be the first MA candidate to lose NH
Clinton was from the South running against a MA Democrat (Tsongas). Kerry has to win. Dean has to win. Who ever loses is out.

8. Oh pleeeezzz!
With the build up Dean has had over these last 6 months he either blows him out of the water (at LEAST 12%) or Kerry lives!

13. I agree
Dean has to do incredibly well in order to be viable.

12. A Mass. and VT. candidate have never before competed
this is new. (Geographic note: Vermont/NH border is probably twice as long as Mass/NH.)
Political Note: NH is famously independent.
2004 Note: Dated Dean, Married Kerry. :)

So, if Kerry loses NH, he should drop out. :-)

18. You Forgot Ted Kennedy.....
Carter beat Ted Kennedy and Jerry Brown in New Hampshire in 1980...

That and the loss in Iowa a week before crippled his campaign before he regained his stride by winning New York and some of the big industrialized states...

2. Why are we listening to Monkey Business?
I don't think Dean's as stupid as you are, Gary, so hit the bricks. You stopped mattering when the New Kids on the Block's career died out.

Later.

11. Agreed...
...I disagree with his sentiment here, which may go a long way toward explaining the strategy of the congressional candidate alliance, but he's ok.

6. Because he knows a lot more about politics
than just about this whole forum combined. Not saying he's right, mind you. But dismissing out of hand a man who has been root-down in politics since 1968 is the equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears and humming to drown out the world around you.

21. Funny,
but telling reporters "Go ahead, follow me -- you'll be bored." when you are actually cheating on your wife just doesn't cut it as political acumen in my book.

Perhaps we're talking about politics as different creatures.

22. Exactly.
All he knows about politics, and he's a buffoon with sitcom hair and an ego problem. Much like...who am I thinking of here, Will? ;)

23. Well...
We all know how Clinton's passion for hummers almost destroyed his presidency. Barney Frank had a live-in guest who ran a prostitution ring out of his house. Both are extraordinarily savvy political operators who had stupid moments of personal weakness. I wouldn't summarily dismiss advice from either of them just because they got caught canoodling. Same goes for Hart, though he's wrong about Dean.

24. Hart is the SMARTEST national security guy out there.
Remember the Hart-Rudman report?

Go ahead and ignore Hart's warnings. Bush and Cheney did, too. That worked out well for the country, didn't it?

25. I hope someday
I can cowrite one report and be considered the smartest guy out there.

I mean I wrote a really good report once in my symbolism in anthropology class. But it didn't get me those kinds of accolades.

3. Just because Hart got caught "peaking too soon"
doesn't mean he is an authority on the subject. Is he stuck back in his own primary problems? I suspect he's doing a bit of projecting on this one. Maybe he should just take Kerry's advice and "get over it". :D

Yeah, this is both "snarky" and "mean", but when I hear politicians repeating ridiculous talking points, they deserve a good lampooning.

7. he's just repeating the meme the Kerry camp is trying to spread
a few months ago Kerry said Dean was "imploding".

Joe Trippi replied that if they were in fact "imploding", imagine what'll happen when they explode.

Dean will be in trouble. Dean HAS to knock him out in NH! Not true for Kerry.

10. Dean's raised more money this quarter than his rivals did last quarter.
I hear it's up to 5 mil already.

And then comes the SEIU endorsement.

Dean's peaking too soon, alright! What an implosion!

14. So where is the peak?
Edited on Thu Nov-06-03 12:15 PM by GumboYaYa
Dean looks to be getting the SEIU endorsenment today. His fund raising is continuing at a pace that the other candidates can only dream about. The AFSCME is leaning toward endorsing Dean. His meetups are growing faster than any other candidate. He is still in a statistical dead heat in Iowa with Gep and continues to lead Kerry in NH by a significant margin. If you turn on the news, the only person being talked about is Dean.

I respect Gary Hart, but he is staying on message for his guy and not giving real political analysis. I see nothing in the current news to indicate that Dean has peaked. In fact it looks like he may still be building his strength.
