Howard Dean and finances
I was just wonderin' how fellow DU'ers feel about Dean's financil question: Should the campaign go traditional, or should the campaign remain publically financed.
I want to remain publcally financed, and will conceed that this will leave the campaign "dry" during the summer of 2004, with Bush using millions to discredit Dean ("the summer of negativity").
I think that DFA is a new paradigm for how a succuessful campaign works. Lets stick with it.
What says you?

1. Don't bring a knife to a gun fight
If we want to take Bush on, we'll need to use every resource available to us. Opt out is the only logical choice and I think it was stupid for any of them to say they wouldn't when they started.

12. I'd personally like to see a campaign "salary cap"
Like you see in the NFL and NBA. Canidates, by law, could spend only a set maximum in the general election.

2. I see your point
and the DNC would be able to spend money on his behalf during the summer.

I reluctantly voted the other way. I think he can raise a lot of money.

4. the DNC would not be able to name him during the summer
that's the big problem… that the ad can't name/focus on the candidate

5. To stay with this system is to lose in November
No serious Dems should accept public financing this time around. I say this as a supporter of fixing the system, but if we except the $45 million limit (no matter who gets the nom), we will be at a $160 million disadvantage. Moral righteousness will not make up that difference. Think what repugs will do with $160 million. They will paint our candidate as the next coming of Satan.

If we want to have a chance of fixing this system, we must win this election. George Bush has decided to play by one set of rules and we should play by the same set.

6. Can you imagine how much $ bush will have?
He'll set records in rfundraising this year--he's doing it full time on the taxpayer's dime. And if Dean uses federal funds, he'll only have something like $40 million to work with. We have to beat these sleazebags, no matter what it takes. And it's going to take a lot of cash, that's for sure. The gloves are off as far as I'm concerned.

7. We have to opt out.
We can't go dark over the summer and let Bush just whale on us. If we don't opt out we might as well quit now.

8. agree
there really is no choice..this has been a grass roots people driven campaign so far and we must keep it that way...president dean will only have the people to answer to

9. Why tie Dean's hands?
It makes no sense. He is already proving that he's a phenomenal fundraiser. If you limit him the way the statists want to, he'd be locked in at 45 mil while DimSon and his corporate whores cover the Bush campaign with staggering mountains of cash.

11. Limiting our candidate to $45 million
Limiting our candidate to $45 million is leaving him or her to the mercy of KKKarl Rove, and we know how tender that mercy is.

I say him or her because it's conceivable that another candidate besides Dean could take the same route. There's loads of anti-Bush sentiment out there. If one of the others were to get the nomination and could raise over $45 million without taking the public funding, they should opt out of it, too.

13. The Dem winner MUST opt out to compete
If we take matching funds, Dean will be broke by March. As sono as he is broke, the Bush machine will start. They will spend 200 million dollars from March to Sept bashing our candidate.

No to matching funds!
