Democratic candidates better start talking about the draft!
The draft was THE issue during the late 1960s anti-Vietnam-War protests and the related countercultural protests.

If the draft comes back, for purposes of the Iraq war (and future "projects" like Syria) people will take to the streets and smash windows and burn buildings.

But it won't make nearly as much difference if this happens after W is "re"-elected.

They are already moving towards re-instating the draft. I've seen several articles and posts about this.

Why can't the Democratic presidential candidates talk about this? Accuse W of planning to reinstate the draft?

1. Bush has gotta stick his neck out more.
He's gotta show his cards first and tell us he wants to invade more countries. Then we've got that card. It's a damned powerful one, though.

2. Unfortunately, Chalie Rangle just about blew it for us on this issue
He was CALLING for a draft about half a year ago....bad, stupid, stuid mistake. That would make even Mrs. Charlie Rangle (if there is one) vote against the Dems!!! It has to be brought up and said the the American people that "at the rate George is going, expect him to call for a draft if he gets re-elected, blah blah". Of course, then they will come back and say "Charlie called for it first". Lord I wished Charlie had shut his mouth so that we could have used this.

5. You may have missed Rangel's point...
He wasn't doing so out of a love for the draft - he was doing so to expose the "war" to growing public resistance in the way that 'Nam's draft did. He was also demonstrating that such a draft would take a larger toll on the poor and minorities than it would on socially insulated little pricks like Bush and Cheney.

I will give you this, though. Such high minded tactics as Rangels are often lost on the average voting republican, which demonstrates a political and social IQ equating that of a garden vegetable.
