Do you remember the Marsh Arabs?
Wolfowitz talked about these people and about how happy they were to have there place back. These people made oases and trees in a very dry part of Mesopotamia. He mentioned this during his speech at Georgetown.

Well, check this out:

Perhaps most importantly from a humanitarian point of view, Iraq's once thriving marshes, which Saddam had drained as a way of punishing the Marsh Arabs for revolting against him in 1991, are now being revitalized, and the Marsh Arabs, against whom Saddam had tried to commit genocide, are returning to their former way of life.

--Oxblog, in a widely praised speech on Iraq

Restoring an area that is said to have been the biblical Garden of Eden, marshlands that Saddam Hussein turned into an arid salt bed in his purge of Shiite Muslims, was one of President Bush's priorities when he asked Congress for $20.3 billion to help rebuild Iraq.

It also was among the few items House Republicans decided to cut, at least for now, if the United States had to pay for it. They chopped $100 million from Bush's bill for resurrecting the Mesopotamian marshlands between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers.

--Guardian, Oct. 15

I guess they only care about the oil.

4. besides rude and duplicious, a perhaps dangerous mistake
the Iraqi Hizbu'llah, while small, was one of the most consistantly effective units of resistance to Saddam's government from those marshes. Months ago there was an interview with their leader which stated that he was patient for now, but would be picking the guns back up if the occupation forces stayed around for too long. These arrogant clowns seem hell-bent on thumbing their nose at everybody, then act surprised when there is resistance.

6. Too Ridaculous
Restoration of th Marsh Arab's environment, if not their whole culture, was one of the few positive developments I was looking forward to, and the Republicans have taken that away from us (humans).

I *hate* those guys.

7. I still have an old National Geographic issue. . .
that featured the Marsh Arabs. It was sometime in the 1970's, I believe.
