Israel
Edited on Fri Nov-07-03 11:40 PM by jiacinto
Now this isn't an I/P question, but I was putting away Calvin Klein Underwear at work. Then I saw something on the label of a T-shirt. It said "Made in Israel".

Does Isreal have a sweat shop sector? I never knew that. I was wondering why Calvin Klein did business in Israel when there is cheaper labor to be had in China or other parts of Asia.

4. Ok
But let's keep this from being moved to I/P. I'll do anything to prevent that from happening because this isn't about the I/P conflict, but rather about the Israeli manufacturing sector.

12. Not currently
That labor supply has been limited because of the endless number of terror bombings. Israel imports labor from Asia and Eastern Europe. I think last year the number was some 300,000 laborers.

5. victoria secret as well
*i know, i know, my mom bought them for me*

their underwear, which i find really uncomfortable, even the cotton ones, is made in israel.

im not sure what their labour practices are but, besides the fact that they are made in israel and not in the US like they should if its an american company, i dont want my money going their via taxes or underwear.

6. It has to do with Jordan and the 1994 peace agreement
Specifically for the Calvin Klein Underwear, the sweatshops(Qualified Industrial Zones) are in Jordan.

11. Probably because part of it is made in Israel.
And there might be something in the whole deal that allows Jordan to label goods made in the Qaulified Industrial Zones(that need at least 8% Israeli inputs) as made in Israel for the US market. Just like companies like to get Mariana Islands sweatshops so they can label their stuff made in USA. People are less likely to think Israeli or USA labeled goods are made in sweatshops.
