WOW, Dean to Use Shrub's "Spacesuit/Aircraft" Video in New Ads
To Dean, a Bush image is fodder
By Sarah Schweitzer, Globe Staff, 11/8/2003

NASHUA -- Presidential contender Howard Dean plans to air television commercials showing footage of President Bush's landing on the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln -- images Bush deployed as a triumphant visual coda to the Iraq conflict but which Dean says are now powerful reminders of a war gone wrong.

With mounting casualties and unrest in Iraq, the images, which include a backdrop banner reading "Mission Accomplished," are increasingly viewed by Bush's political opponents as a liability. Dean is the first Democrat to commit to using them in his ads.

"We're going to put up the aircraft carrier ad and show what his real defense is," Dean said in an interview on Thursday. "We're going to use this footage of him landing on the aircraft carrier . . . to show that he's all talk and no action. And the action he's got us into has cost us 400 lives and thousands of wounded people who will never get their limbs back."

I hope someone runs with that and makes an ad comparing Lieberman to Bush while the Imperial March plays.

This is something that the supporters of all the candidates were wishing for their canididate to do. It will be interesting to see if any of them condemn Dean for doing the same thing they wished their candidate had done.

Go Dean!

8. I swear, the image of Bush on the carrier will live on long after
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 12:13 PM by Cat Atomic
his presidency is over.

It's just such a perfect symbol of the modern American psyche. It says that this is a culture that cares about image above all else- that perception is reality, and that marketing is king.

Imagine- an entire country celebrated the end of a war simply because a small group of political marketing guys decided that we'd reached the proper dramatic conclusion.

They pulled a statue down and just decided to call that victory. It was romantic- it "sold". The President had a Hollywood-style display on a carrier, announced victory, and the whole country just accepted it. Just like that.

The problem is that perception is NOT reality. It's like this country had to be slapped in the face to see that the world is not just one big reality TV show.

bush took after the WTC attacks, was to get to Nebraska, and huddle in a bunker. Not exactly presidential material for wanting to look like some kind of 'tough guy'. As is his usual mental state, he was so scared he soiled his pantaloons.

To all those naysayers who moan and whine about Dean----his tenacity to come out front with this shows what kind of a campaign he's running, and it's the BEST campaign out there in the field. Sure, Clark has been talking smack about Bush but I don't see any TV ads yet from him.....and it's DEAN who's the first one to do this!!!! I just can't get how some people are blind to this....

52. With Dean and his supporters, this is personal.
I am so happy and delighted to see someone like Dean, with a background and ancestors steeped in American history, stand up for us in restoring our democratic republic. The speeches I like best are those in which he quotes people like Lincoln, Jefferson, and Paine. He is a smart man with a big heart, and he really seems to love people and hate it when they are being taken advantage of, lied to, divided, and killed for geopolitical gain. The Dean for America Declaration of Independence, released today, is in keeping with this. The whole thing is much more than I could ever have imagined. I worried that Democrats couldn't find someone to beat Bush. I am frankly amazed that not only have we been able to do so, but that we have someone as talented and devoted as this fine man. It blows my mind.

Bush doesn't have a chance and won't even know what happened.

His supporters are laughing Dean off complacently. They won't know what happened either. Some of them will be bright enough to comprehend the message and vote for Dean to restore some kind of sanity to our country. Some of them already understand. The election next year will be historic.

Great days are ahead.

P.S. I love looking at the photos on the DeanforAmerica site, especially the ones showing the campaign staff in Burlington. They are living at headquarters, as evidenced by the details of their surroundings. They are working so hard.

I think it's VITAL that we commandeer that imagery, that we make him look like such a superficial self-serving buffoon the Bush Regime won't be able to go near it. I hope Dean won't forget to mention that the ship had to stay offshore an extra day to make the event happen. If the Pretzel-Dunce is lying about saying that MAJOR combat operations were over (once and for all, is that true or not?), that should be pointed out, too. And The Mission Accomplished sign is not a minor matter. It says a lot about Bush's personal character that he's so repulsed by the prospect of admitting a mistake he'd tell a lie which he should have known he'd get caught in.

rocknation

P.S. All Clark needs to do is put Georgie's Commander Codpiece pic next to one of him in full uniform, or better yet, in military action. Oh, I hope it true that one will serve as VP if the other wins!

40. If he can do that, can he do this too?
I had thought that there would be some kind of copyright law or something to prevent that, glad there apparently isn't. Which makes me wonder...

Can he use the moron's SOTU address where he spewed the yellowcake lie?

Can he use Cheney's "nuclear" claim vid from MTP?

Can he use Rummy's appearance where he stated "we know where they (wmds) are, near Tikrit and Baghdad, to the north and east and west and south, somehwat." - ?

I mean, the Mission Accomplished debacle is probably the most starkly visual, therefore probably the most effective for a short tv spot, but can Dean (or anyone else) use some of the other wealth of documented proof of the lies of this regime?

at any rate - GO DEAN!

63. He needs to do a trifecta ad
show a couple or three different times when Chimp makes the joke then say, "Are you laughing? Not only is the death of 3000 not a laughing matter, the President didn't even make that promise during the campaign, he just made the story up to be funny."

68. Exellent! Preemptive strike!!!q
Before the Bush regime starts using that imagery in its own campaign, hijack it and give it a different, subversive meaning!

It's a genius move!!

69. I hate to be the devil's advocate but...
a lot of people in the US loved that moment. Not me. I was already sending ean checks. But could americans see this as anti-american and even anti-military? I see run the sound byte of "bring 'em on" while showing clips of wounded GIs and flag draped coffins. It shifts more blame to Bush.

70. GREAT!! And now I'm waiting for the ad using Bush and the leering old men
at the signing of the WOMAN KILLER so-called "partial birth" abortion bill!

Dr. Dean, tell us there is no such thing and shove it up their crotches for me!!!

(not committed yet, but cheering nonetheless!)
