Let's not limit our help to the holidays--get in the habit of checking in with your local food bank, food pantry, or hunger outreach centers weekly. This is going to be a tough, long winter for a lot of people, and your help makes a big difference. And your smiling face coming through the door will make a huge difference!
1) clean out your food cabinets and donate what you know you don't want or need
2) talk to local restaurants about donating what they don't use. Connect them to the local food pantry/center. Make sure to get them on at least a weekly pickup and make sure you or someone else makes the pickup every week. There are local/state laws about prepared foods, so make sure you aren't breaking any local regs or endangering the restaurant.
3) donate money
4) if you can't afford to donate, offer to work the distribution center, dining room or kitchen.
5) sit down and have a meal with people served by the kitchen. Loneliness can cause a lot more pain than hunger sometimes.
6) make friends. spread the joy. we're all neighbors in some way.
