should Springsteen let the Dems use "Born in the USA" in the 2004 campaign
Considering that he has already spoken so clearly that Bush must be defeated in 2004, I hope he does.

While the martial sound of the song has been used as a misbegotten paean to patriotisn, the intent of the song addresses the issues that face America today, and ones which are the cornerstones of the Democratic party.

Imagine the deconstruction of the song on the campaign trail by the Democratic nominee as to its value to help delineate what is important to the country.

The Dems need a good story, a good narrative to tell. The ones Springsteen sings about America are as good as they get and they will resonate.

1. Don't know the words in the song except
Born In the USA. Perhaps if I had the songs contents I and maybe others could agree.

6. Jesus Christ!
First time I ever read that. Hard to believe they were so stupid as to use that for the Reagan campaign.

16. I believe the Raygun campaign wanted to use the song
but Bruce basically told them to fuck off because they obviously didn't understand the song.

8. Actually, Born in the USA is perfect!
It does appeal to the shallow patriots on a superficial level, but the lyrics are more thoughtful. It's also something that Gulf War veterans can relate to. Taking it away from the Republicans would be the icing on the cake.

11. Well, "Land of Hope and Dreams"
Edited on Sat Nov-08-03 05:19 PM by latebloomer
is more upbeat and carries a more hopeful message.

Or what about "Promised Land"??-- he could change some of the verses to reflect what's going on today.

And if Bush wins again, Goddess forbid, we'll all be singing "Born to Run"!

18. Actually, maybe Dean should be using Skynyrd songs
it would fit his recent statements. Probably not Saturday Night Special though. ;-)

19. That song...
I always knew the lyrics and found it funny to say the least that the republicans wanted to use that song, lol.

I'm sick of it myself.

Remember what Bruce said way back then, instead:

"Don't vote for that fuck Bush!"
:)

20. Yes! Maybe we'd even get some "Bubba" votes
because they don't actually listen to the words--they just think it's a flag-waving song.
