Continuing Saga of the 30-Hour Marathon Senate Debate Thread #4
Rick Santorum is shouting and screaming and raving like a lunatic.

About what, I haven't the slightest clue :shrug:

These people are truly INSANE!

82. I second that motion - sick of both of them
Allen is a pure waste of time and Warner is polite, but I get responses to my appeals to vote a particular way that are 180 out from my views. In short, both are a waste of time and should be voted out, but living in this great red state, they will not be voted out. The VA Dems missed their chance to put up a decent candidate against Warner last year and I expect they will do the same when Allen is up for re-election - nothing.

6. US Senate Begins Marathon 30-Hour Debate on Judicial Nominations
The U.S. Senate is engaged in a 30-hour non-stop debate to highlight a long-standing partisan standoff over several of President Bush's judicial nominations.

Republican leaders scheduled the marathon session with the hope of raising public anger over Democrats' tactics aimed at blocking several of President Bush's judicial nominations from coming to a vote on the Senate floor.

<snip>

As they prepared for the debate, Republican leaders rolled out cots for lawmakers who might need a nap during the long session.

In fact, Republicans say they hope to catch Democrats asleep, or off the Senate floor, so they can sneak in a vote approving the nominees.

Senator Daschle says that will not happen because Democrats have agreed that at least two members of their party will be in the chamber prepared to speak at any time.

8. Republicans Begin Marathon Senate Session in Protest
<snip>

Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, an assistant Republican leader and a principal architect of the session, told reporters that, "We'll work well into the night on Thursday night, and we will do what is best for this country and what is best for the Constitution to try to restore the tradition and precedent of the Senate to get up or down votes on judicial nominations for the sake of this country and for the sake of the independence of the judiciary."

Republicans are angered that although they have 51 votes, a slim majority, they have not been able to get all of President Bush's judicial nominees confirmed. The Democrats have succeeded in blocking, so far, four of Mr. Bush's nominees to the federal appeals courts, the level just below the Supreme Court while confirming 28 appeals court judges.

The Democrats have been able to block the four, who they say are conservative ideologues outside the mainstream of legal thought, by threatening filibusters, or extended debates. To break the filibusters, the Republicans need a three-fifths majority or 60 votes. So far, they have only succeeded in attracting a few Democratic defectors.

Schumer yields to a question from the Senator from Texas.

Makes the point that there HAVE been filibusters! Asks the Republicans when THEY filibustered (names at least 3 judges that were filibustered) why there wasn't a problem. Says that the only problem is that the Democratic filibusters have SUCCEEDED while the Republican filibusters weren't successful! (Dems were able to muster the min. 60 votes to defeat the Republican filibusters).

51. It's too bad
there isn't a mechanism whereby we can send emails to the body of the Senate (not just our senators) during this circus to let them know we think this is a piss-poor use of their time. I mean, I live in NY, so my senators are doing great (I'm gonna assume Hillary will breathe fire later in this debacle), so I can send them notes saying "Go, You!" But it would be nice if we could get a running "people's commentary" on the whole proceeding, if that makes sense.

65. To use the argument that there is a backlog of cases
Edited on Wed Nov-12-03 11:31 PM by JellyBean1
that the 4 must be affirmed, is incorrect. *Bush needs to present candidates that are judicial material, non-idealogs.

It is not the senates responsibility to fill the slots with just anybody. The senate MUST consent that judges will be good judges.

The repubs argument is wrong, again.

71. One more point
Congress (Senate in this case) is "We the people" and it their responsibility to voice the values of the people.

Congress alone sets the values we hold, as a country.

This is why judicial appointments must come through the Senate. How else can the values of the country be applied to the laws?

An All-Nighter in the Senate
GOP Aims to Call Attention to Blocked Judicial Nominees
By Helen Dewar
Washington Post Staff Writer
Thursday, November 13, 2003; Page A01

<snip>

The debate got off to a wobbly start when Sens. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) and Barbara A. Mikulski (D-Md.) complained about unfinished work on a spending bill. Republicans, meanwhile, objected to a large purple sign reading "168 to 4" that Democrats posted on their side of the chamber. The Senate has confirmed 168 federal judges tapped by Bush, while Democrats have blocked four. Democrats were told to remove the sign until it was their turn to speak.

No one expects any votes to change when GOP senators try again Friday to confirm three stalled judges and change Senate rules to limit filibusters against nominations. Nor do they expect many Americans to be glued to their television sets at 4 a.m. to follow the latest twist in the debate.

But both parties planned hours of hoopla -- including news conferences, photo opportunities, Internet chats and, for Republicans, a "talk radio alley" in a Senate office building -- to energize their hard-core constituencies and score political points. The show of strength was particularly important for Republicans, who have come under pressure from their conservative base to fight harder for confirmation of the stalled nominees.

106. It's a stupid debate...
The fillibuster is not a procedure rather the act of attempting to postpone something indefinately. Therefore a Hold as I believe they said was part of the senate's parliamentary book is a tool that can be used in a fillibuster.

Please stand strong against the effort to push through unqualified, and possibly unscrupulous, Bush judicial appointments.

We can no longer afford to allow aggressive Republican leaders, with a deleterious agenda, to cow us into silence or fearful cooperation. This nation's citizens desperately need the opposition party to live up to its name and truly OPPOSE harmful Republican tactics and agendas.

Just as importantly, we faithful Democrats are fed up with cowardly representatives who have not, or cannot face down the GOP politicians who distort the truth and slander Democrats as a whole. We are patriotic Americans, too, and we want what is best for this country!!
