1. Actually
I wish we weren't linked to Amazon. Their policies are harmful to writers. Doesn't Barnes and Noble have an associate program?

But here's your :kick: anyway.

3. What about Powells.com?
They're a distributor that specializes in progressive publishers, rare and hard-to-find books. I get the impression that they are kind of like that local rare and used bookstore that used to be in a lot of towns -- only on the web.

Plus, they're ALWAYS advertised in progressive publications.

9. How is Amazon harmful to writers? Since when has selling lots of books
been bad for writers?

Anyway, writers contract with publishers not retailers. So long as retailers are selling their books, there's not much they can do to hurt them.

8. Sorry I have to be the one to say it:

BOYCOTT AMAZON.COM!

From the Organizing Committee:

Workers at Borders Books store #1 in Ann Arbor, MI will go on strike this Saturday, November 8 at 9:00 AM. We do not take this step lightly. By striking, we hope to convince Borders Management to negotiate with us in good faith so we can reach a fair contract and return to our jobs.

We are writing to ask you to continue to support us by
1) boycotting all Borders, Waldenbooks, and Amazon.com;
2) volunteering to picket with workers in front of the store;
3) joining Borders Readers United, our community support coalition (bru@riseup.net)
4) calling Borders Headquarters (734-477-1100) to tell them you support us;
5) coming to our Strike Fund Concert at the Ark in Ann Arbor on 11/10/03;
6) signing an online petition: Borders Readers -- http://www.petitiononline.com/ufcw976b/petition.html
7) forwarding this message to all your friends and colleagues!

In Solidarity and thanks,
Borders Workers Union Organizing Committee

10. Walden and Borders are the same company. What's the logic for
boycotting Amazon? Amazon is just their partner for online sales.

11. Borders owns a part of Amazon.com
And every sale they make online makes Borders more money.

13. You sure
it's Borders that owns a part of Amazon or the other way around?

I would have thought Amazon's the bigger company.

I do know that Borders website says, Borders brought to you with Amazon.com or something to that effect.

15. From the Borders workers' website
"Borders sold the Borders On Line website to Amazon. Now we have a 'partnership' in which you can use Borders gift cards on Amazon (but only for things B sells) and Amazon might direct you to B locations. I'm not sure what the financial relationship is other than that, but it was enough for Borders On Line employees to hear that they were being laid off...on the way to work...over the radio..."

16. Borders doesn't own any part of Amazon AFAIK. They have a partnership
with Amazon to manage their web site.

I don't see why Amazon needs to be punished for the hiring/firing practices of a completely separate company.

18. By boycotting Amazon...
We are hoping they will pressure Borders to settle with their employees and offer them a decent contract...

Amazon and Borders are only linked online. Neither company owns any part of the other one.
