WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Democratic opposition in the US Senate, alarmed at escalating anti-US violence in Iraq (news - web sites), will ask the Central Intelligence Agency (news - web sites) for a briefing on the situation there, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle said.
"We will ask that the CIA (news - web sites) brief the members of Congress with regards to circumstances as soon as possible," he told a press conference, commenting on media reports citing a CIA document as describing a "bleak situation" in Iraq.

In addition, Daschle noted, US civilian administrator in Iraq Paul Bremer was in Washington this week for White House briefings, a visit he said Congress was not informed of in advance.
"It's an indication they have to be very deeply concerned about the ... set of circumstances that appear to be even more troublesome today than they were a few weeks ago," Daschle said.
