Family of fallen US soldier divided over military funeral honors

CHICAGO (AFP) - A US helicopter pilot who died in a deadly ambush in Iraq last week will be buried in a church graveyard without military honors at the request of his mother.

Rosemarie Dietz Slavenas refused to use a casket provided by the military and asked that her son's coffin not be draped with a US flag in a decision that has created something of a family rift, the Chicago Tribune reported.

Dietz Slavenas told the Tribune that her son had tried to resign his commission rather than go to Iraq, but the military had blocked his resignation.

"They did not honor his resignation," she said. "If they had honored him when he resigned, he would still be with me today. And that's the most important thing to me today. That's unspeakably difficult."

As executor of her son's will, Dietz Slavenas, an anti-war activist, had the final say over arrangements.

1. More coming from the families
The families of the soldiers killed may be a key component in exposing the madness of Bush's war. More and more of this showing up. Needless to say, GWB has YET to attend a soldier's funeral, and I think the families recognize he couldn't care less about the bodies he is throwing in there as cannon fodder. My sympathies to the family.

2. This really pisses me off and sadened
I hate read this news, we have to stop this innane madness. If he wanted out why didn't he refuse to serve and go to jail? If he were that committed to protesting the war, setting a brig is a much better alternative than dying. Don't get me wrong, I'm very saddened by his death and we need to stop having to read these stories each day....

3. Just pack up and leave.
If we pack up ,board ships, planes and return what happens? There could be civil war between Sunni's and Shites? Sunni's win with more weapons or Iran backs the Shites and holds an election like they did in Iran. Syria ,Egypt and maybe Saudi Arabia step in to stop the fighting? Europe and Russia step in to protect their oil supply?
Bottom line ,Our guys are home, aWol,cHenney,rUmmy are prosecuted by U.S. and World Courts and ridiculed for failing everything.
Bring the troops home now.
