Estimated 50,000 insurgents now in Iraq...
Edited on Thu Nov-13-03 05:20 PM by kentuck
According to the Guardian newspaper, this led to an emergency plan being drawn up at the WH by Bush, Bremer, Cheney,CIA and other intelligence experts. Their plan is to accelerate the transfer of power to the IGC beforethe situation gets out of control. This puts a lie to the all the "good news" that is coming out of Iraq lately. Even TV shows, like Chris Matthews, have been attempting to put the good face on this disaster in the making.

<snip>
The White House yesterday drew up emergency plans to accelerate the transfer of power in Iraq after being shown a devastating CIA report warning that the guerrilla war was in danger of escalating out of US control.
The report, an "appraisal of situation" commissioned by the CIA director, George Tenet, and written by the CIA station chief in Baghdad, said that the insurgency was gaining ground among the population, and already numbers in the tens of thousands.

One military intelligence assessment now estimates the insurgents' strength at 50,000. Analysts cautioned that such a figure was speculative, but it does indicate a deep-rooted revolt on a far greater scale than the Pentagon had led the administration to believe.

An intelligence source in Washington familiar with the CIA report described it as a "bleak assessment that the resistance is broad, strong and getting stronger".

1. Gee, I wonder what their first clue was. This is evolving in the exact...
...manner that so many experts predicted it would. As bad as things were in Iraq before the invasion, we've managed to further destablize the country and the entire region.

It doesn't sound like it.

Mr Chalabi dismissed a CIA report suggesting that there could be up to 50,000 insurgents in Iraq. He said: "No, I don't think that figure is credible. This is a large exaggeration.

"It is only a few thousand allies of Saddam and his associates and people in senior positions in the Ba'ath Party. There is an area where they have some support in the population." But he argued that there was no political vacuum in the country.

14. Yeah, Chalabi dismisses a CIA report
Then again, he's not exactly a credible source.

8. Did Bush and Cheny get the 50,000 number from their source
Edited on Thu Nov-13-03 08:12 PM by rustydog
on the number and location of WMD's?

Remember, Bush Co. call these freedom fighters foreign insurgents.
they also call them Saddam Loyalists.

What if, just what if these attacks are being carried out by the Iraqi people? Not Terrorists, not Loyalists, but patriotic iraqis who detest having their families murdered by Americans and their "homeland" occupied by the Armies of George Bush?

It doesn't matter in the end who is doing this, because Bush and Cheny will lie about it anyway. Our troops are dying and Bush is worried about POLL NUMBERS, not dead and wounded Americans.

9. the lead general
Abazid(sp?) was on early today and said 5,000 at his briefing, not 50,000.

More bad US intel? Who is more believable on the #s, the military on the ground there or the CIA? Ask yourself who has the better track record w.r.t intel lately...

10. 50K ????
I heard 5K earlier today. Remember, a few hundred IRA provos with fewer arms have created a mess in Northern Ireland. Never underestimate motivated people.

13. It would not suprise me in a country with 25 million people to have
50K people upset the occupation of their country.

11. Oh, My.
Wow. 50,000?

I hope to the heavens that these chickenhawks understand just what kind of hell they have placed our young men and women into.

Thanks Kentuck for bringing this story here. How would we have known otherwise?

12. The truth is that....
probably no one knows how many insurgents are in Iraq? All they know is that the number of attacks is increasing dramatically.
