Major Developments in Iraq

<snip>In Baghdad, the surge in violence prompted coalition authorities to close a major bridge that had reopened about two weeks ago amid U.S. fanfare. The bridge runs near the U.S.-guarded compound known as the "Green Zone," which includes headquarters of the Coalition Provisional Authority.

<snip>In the southern city of Samawah, Iraqi police opened fire Thursday on a crowd of stone-throwing protesters angry about alleged police corruption, wounding one of them, witnesses said. Several protesters were arrested; the situation calmed after the arrival of Dutch soldiers.

1. "Iraqi police": U.S. mercenaries or legitimate servants of Iraq?
I wonder what the average Iraqi thinks of the local police being clad in U.S.-supplied clothing and trained by them. I'm sure some police are motivated by a desire to "help" their nation and people. But I can't help thinking that, out of economic desperation, many Iraqis will take dangerous security jobs that should be performed by the occupying force. It is the U.S. and the U.K. that are responsible for the physical safety and economic sustenance of the Iraqi people.

2. Does anyone know what is going on in Iraq?
In two days every thing has come around 180. Now we are leaving almost today and few days ago I swear Prez said nothing would make us stop this fight. It is like the news is now saying we can not 'win' so we are leaving. I feel like I am coming out of a fog. Is Gerogie Boy sick of war now?
