WASHINGTON - Sen. James M. Inhofe, a Republican from Oklahoma, freely admits that he may be the single biggest fund-raising asset to environmental groups.
But not for the reasons you might think. Inhofe, chairman of the influential Environment and Public Works Committee, believes that global warming is a hoax, favors oil drilling in Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and thinks the Endangered Species Act has gone too far.
Last week he led the attack on legislation proposed by Sens. John McCain (R., Ariz.) and Joe Lieberman (D., Conn.) that allows electric utilities and other major producers of carbon dioxide to buy and sell the right to emit the so-called greenhouse gas into the atmosphere. During the debate he gave the longest speech of his career, denouncing "extreme" environmentalists as nothing short of anti-American.
