12. well, they are relatively new
All the groups I listed are old-line traditional Democratic orgs, but it sure looks like online groups like MoveOn and TM are going to be a big deal in the near future.

14. I see them more as "oversight" groups
I agree that they will become more and more important, but probably less and less "Democrat" as time goes on. If we regain either the white house or the Senate, I'm sure these kind of organizations would still act as watchdogs against government excess.

If they'd been in place during the Clinton administration, for example, I'm sure they would have taken issue with NAFTA, the WTO, etc.

20. I hope so
That's something I fear, we get a Democrat in office and everyone goes to sleep and pretends everything's okay. If they can be effective watchdogs, I'm all for it.

4. Why, none of them!
The only group I agree with all the time is Me, Myself and I!

However, I do agree with all of those groups most of the time. And I've put my money down for 3 of them.

5. Actually, these aren't "Democratic groups"...
they're groups that usually support Democrats. I know plenty of AFL-CIO members who are Republicans (don't ask me why). It's like saying the NRA is a "Republican group". They're not, although many of their members are Republicans.

7. Agreed
These groups are not "Democratic groups" but rather special interest groups. Their interest often align with Democrats, but not always. For instance, lots of labor unions endorsed Pataki and helped to get him re-elected.

15. they are NOT "special interest" groups
Sorry, this is my pet peeve. "Special Interests" means corporate and monied interests, and always has. In the 1970s and 1980s the Republicans tried to redefine the term "special interests" to mean social groups and movements.

True, these aren't "Democratic" organizations, but they are all powerhouses in the Democratic party, and not so in the GOP.

16. I would call them special interests
Although I agree with their goals, their activity is the same as any other lobby. They are attempting to use money and influence in order to create a certain desired legislative effect.

If the NRA or AAA are special interests, I think we'd have to include these groups as well.

19. if you choose to use that definition, sure
I wouldn't call the NRA and the AAA "special interest groups" either, except as far as they represent manufacturer's interests. "Special interests" always meant groups who have a financial stake in specific policies, as opposed to a social interest. Perhaps keeping the term strictly defined to that is a losing (or lost) battle...

..the choice between the DLC and Americans for Democratic Action. That would have been interesting. It is always good to have another chance to slam the Democrats for the Leisure Class.

Don't miss that point. They are voters who could be persuaded to vote against Bush next November. They are the elusive "Swing Voters".
